"So what did you buy Ashton for his birthday?" Autumn's brother, Eric, asked her, craning his neck to see into the gift bag.

They were in the car on their way to Ashton's seventeenth birthday party.
"I bought him a few vinyls and band shirts."

"Why does he have to his party in the damn middle of nowhere?" Autumn's father, John, groaned.

"It's not the middle of nowhere," She chuckled, rolling her eyes and resting her head against the window.

"I hope it's not outside because this weather isn't looking good," She said to her brother and father as she observed the dark, ominous clouds gathering ahead.

The dismal sky definitely gave her an odd feeling of apprehension but she was right to feel that way because ten minutes later they were driving through a violent storm.

The trees whipped back and forth, sending showers of branches and leaves into the air. In the distance, lightning struck repeatedly, wonderfully illuminating the sky but also creating a loud sound that reverberated around her surroundings.

As the claps of thunder became more frequent, the driving impediment worsened from the wind and rain and made it extremely difficult for John to keep control of the car.

Autumn and Eric were in the middle of a conversation when the car swerved suddenly and her and her brother were flung sideways.

Everything happened so fast that she couldn't comprehend it. John lost control of the wheel resulting in the vehicle crashing through the barrier, plummeting and plunging into the river below.

Autumn couldn't process what was happening until the car began to sink in the river, water entering both the car and her lungs rapidly.

Her gaze darted from her brother, who had his head pressed against the window and his body sat motionless, to her dad, who was trying laboriously to get out of the car.

Autumn began panicking, her throat feeling rough and she couldn't breathe; the water was filling her lungs at an expeditious pace. Her efforts to keep her mouth shut were failing as she had to keep opening it to stop herself choking on the liquid.

She saw her dad finally pry the door open and speedily swim around and open the door. Autumn tugged onerously at her seatbelt and managed to pull it off her.

Her dad grabbed her wrist and looked at her to try and give her hope and reassurance.

She couldn't concentrate on anything else but the water above her and the prospect of air as he pulled her upwards. She wasn't a good swimmer but still tried to assist her dad in getting her to safety.

She got onto the river bank and gasped for air, a euphoria from her lungs finally receiving air. Coughing uncontrollably, she let the air fill her lungs like smoke filling a room and she watched as her dad took a deep breath and dived back in, knowing that he might not come back up.

Disorientated, she place her hand to her pounding head as she tried to recover. How had this happened, she asked herself.

Once she was able to walk, she quickly clambered up the bank and looked around in every direction fearfully.
