Kyler's POV.
May 25, 2019 - 11pm
The moonlight spilled across the water, the gentle waves lapping at the shore in a soothing rhythm that contrasted starkly with the storm inside me. I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at my hands as they gripped my knees, knuckles white. My chest felt tight, every breath shallow, like I couldn't get enough air.
Stass knelt in front of me, her warm colored eyes searching mine with an intensity that made my throat tighten further.
STASS: "Kyler." She said softly, her voice a tether in the chaos. "Talk to me. What's going on in your head?"
She didn't push, just reached out and placed her hands over mine. Her touch was grounding, a reminder that I wasn't alone.
STASS: "Start anywhere. I'm right here."
KYLER: I closed my eyes, exhaling shaky. "It's just...everything. I feel like I'm letting everyone down in some way. Kels, you, the whole group. Like no matter what I do, I'm screwing it up for someone, and it's not like I mean to, it's just..."
STASS: Stass frowned, her hands squeezing mine slightly. "Why do you think you're letting us down?"
KYLER: "Because I agreed to this trip thinking I could relax and everyone would be happy." I admitted, my voice cracking. "But I can't. I can't be the person Kels wants me to be, and I don't want to lose what we had as friends. Then there's you—" My voice caught and I looked away, unable to meet her gaze.
STASS: "Me?" She asked softly, leaning closer.
KYLER: I nodded, my chest tightening further. " I don't want to mess things up with you either. I've felt something for you for so long, Stass. And now it feels like I'm rushing into this, and maybe I am, but I can't help it. It's like the more I try to keep things steady, the more they fall apart."
STASS: She moved her hands to my face, gently cupping my jaw and forcing me to look at her. "Kyler, listen to me. You are not letting anyone down, least of all me."
KYLER: "But I am." I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Kels thinks I'm rushing into this because I'm trying to convince myself I need someone to be okay, or to write songs, stay relevant, but that's not it. I don't want to hurt anyone, but I'm hurting her anyway. And then there's you, and I don't want you to think I'm just—"
STASS: "Stop." She said firmly, cutting me off. "You're not a disappointment. Not to me, not to anyone in your family. And it's not your job to make everyone happy, you need to understand that."
Her words hit something deep inside me, unraveling the tension just enough for me to take a deeper breath.
KYLER: "I just don't know how to deal with all of it." I finally admitted to myself, leaning into her touch.
STASS: "You don't have to deal with it alone." She said gently. "Come on."
KYLER: Before I could protest, she grabbed my hand and pulled me to my feet. "Where are we going?" I asked, my voice still shaky.
STASS: "Outside. Fresh air, ocean breeze—it'll help. It's kind of our thing, actually." She said, her tone leaving no room for argument.
