The train journey back home wasn't of any importance. It was filled with the four of us sitting in silence, lost in thought of the events that have just occurred these past two days.
Y/N moved to sit at the far corner of the train, far away from everyone as she faced the wall. I'm pretty sure she was crying and didn't want anybody to see. Or maybe she was just thinking; hey, who knows? I would've gone over, but I think she needed time to herself.
Claire was sat beside Sherry, her arm around her as she comforted the child quietly. It's a sweet sight, and I glanced up every so often to get my mind off things. Although, if I looked for too long, it reminded me of everything all over again.
Being sat on my own has it's benefits, anyway. I'm not quite as isolated as the punk, but I'm also not too far away to feel unsupported. Not that I need support, but the moral support always feels better.
In the end, the two of them did come out of the other room. The door was jammed shut on purpose by Sherry, as commanded by Claire, apparently. She really didn't want us to help, huh?
Either way, it doesn't matter, because they're here now. And they're safe.
As the train comes to a halt in a different part of Missouri, I clear my throat and snap them all out of their own thoughts.
"We're here." I announce, feeling like the train conductor for a moment. The three of them glance over to me, and we step off the train into the darkness of the night. We arrive at a trainstation pretty far from anywhere, so I'm pretty confused when immediately, I'm swarmed by a group of cops. They crowd around me, asking too many questions at once.
"Tell us what happened!"
I glance around nervously, Claire and Sherry by my side. Where's the punk?
"You're the rookie, aren't you? Wow!"
I spot her walking away with her hands buried in her pockets. I try to squeeze through the crowd, but there's just too many people.
"Where are you going? We're right here!"
I shake my head quickly. "No, no, no, I need Y/N. Move, please. Sorry, um, can I just," I try to slither through them, but they block my way once again.
"Who? That girl? Who is she? She's not a cop."
"Haha, it's okay, there's a pretty girl in a red jacket here for you."
"The other girl is shirtless though. Look at that body... damn!"
"Look at Kennedy, getting all the girls already!"
Fuck them. Fuck them all. Move, move,
"Move!" I yell, snapping and barging through them all. I jog over to Y/N, who's just been casually walking away the whole time.
"Where are you going? They'll be our ride home." I reassure her, reaching for her hand to let her know I'm here.
She immediately moves her hand away, running said hand through her hair. "I don't think you get it, Leon. I fucking. Hate. Cops. It's like a farm over there. A fucking pig pen. I'm not doing that. I'd rather walk the two miles myself. It's not even that long."
I shake my head. "No, no. You can't do that, it's dark and cold."
"It's two fucking miles, Leon. It'll take me two hours, if that." She huffs, glaring up at me.
Will this woman ever be civil with me!?
"It'll be twenty minutes in the car." I smirk.
"N-"
In an instant, a police car rolls beside the two of us with the sirens blaring. The window slides open and a voice emerges.
"Hey, the two of you are under arrest. Get in the back." Commands Claire, Sherry sitting in the front passenger seat. I laugh, turning to the punk and pulling her into the backseat.
"Oh, Claire, you lifesaver." I applaud her, as the stubborn girl beside me actually climbs in. She must've persuaded some of the cops to car-share.
From there on, we ride into the distance. We hit the city, and basically just... go home. We split ways and go home. The goodbyes are short, and... Sherry comes home with me.
I pull open my unlocked apartment window, climbing inside and unlocking the door for the kid (as I don't have my key). I immediately collapse onto my sofa, face first, and fall asleep. A little reckless, but I'm exhausted.
For a good few months, I look after the little girl. I'm learning to cook, multi-task and provide for multiple people (not just me). But this guardianship is cut short as I recieve a violent knock at my door one day.
I open it with a small smile, which instantly fades as I notice the rifle positioned to my face. I freeze and slowly look up at the person. They're not masked, but they're in uniform.
"I'm with the government agency," The mysterious man begins, his stern expression never faltering for a moment. "This is Leon Scott Kennedy, yes?"
I nod frantically, my eyes darting around. "Y-yes, that's me."
"I've been requested by higher ups to... offer you a place in our line of work." He offers me, his expression seeming as if he really isn't fucking around.
"I don't know if I can, Sherry needs-"
"The kid is already safe with my colleague. I don't think you heard me, Mr Kennedy. You're joining us, right?" His tone drops an octave as he menacingly threatens me.
I sigh. "Okay. You have Sherry..?"
"Good. This is going to require training, but I doubt this will be an issue for you. Come with me, I need you to talk to my boss." He commands, ushering me away from my doorway. I close my eyes for a moment, before nodding and following him.
Why does the world not want to give me a break?
