CHAPTER THIRTY NINE:
"why is the guy who went to japan to free the nogitsune now in beacon hills trying to burn down the woods?" jackson asked pacing around.
"he's not trying to burn down the woods. it's... only part of it." lydia said.
"do we have to play junior detectives? can't we just leave it up to the actual detectives?" jackson asked.
"do you see any actual detectives standing around?" lydia asked him.
"seriously, jackson look around." marcie said.
"but what do detectives do, anyway? do they, like, go to the scene of the crime and... detect something?" jackson asked.
"that's exactly what they do. we need to look at one of the burn sites, the first one." lydia said.
"and i know exactly who can help us." marcie said grabbing her phone to call stiles.
"guys, guys." malia said making marcie put her phone down.
"malia, what is it?" marcie asked her.
"hi." malia said to jackson since they hadn't really met.
"we got a big-ass problem. derek, stilinski, eli, deaton, they're all gone." malia said.
"what?" marcie said.
"what do you mean gone?" lydia asked her.
"they were taken." malia replied.
"by who?" jackson asked.
"the oni." parish said walking into the station.
marcie felt a heavy weight on her chest. she wasn't going to involve stiles anymore. not knowing that people were not vanishing.
-
"these rapid burns... there is something systematic about it." lydia said looking at the ground.
"is she gonna keep talking like this?" malia asked jackson.
"i stopped listening six hours ago." jackson replied.
"you guys could be more helpful." marcie told them.
"all right. i'm sorry. i'm not gonna spend the rest of the day walking through the woods, trying to catch a pyromaniac." malia said.
"do you have a better plan?" jackson asked her.
"we already know what kills the oni." malia said.
"silver." parrish said.
"you with me?" malia asked them.
"go. get all the silver you can. and if you find the oni, don't fight them, kill them." lydia told them before malia and parrish left.
-
"jackson, what do you smell?" lydia asked.
"ugh. the horrifying stench of death." jackson said.
"what else do you smell?" lydia asked.
"it's not gas. it's not lighter fluid or anything like that. it's different." jackson said.
"it smells like chemicals." marcie said.
"chemical accelerant. mm-hmm. it's a quick burn so they can't set the rest of the forest on fire." lydia said.
