Part 27 - Vow to Myself

The black sky turned into an array of yellow and orange as the sun climbed up the Maze walls, waking everyone up from their slumber. Feeling coldness around me, I turned expecting to see Newt there, only for there to be an empty bed and a folded piece of paper with my name on the bedside table, with the sheets neatly put together in contrast to my messy side of the bed. Grumbling, I threw the sheets off me, getting up to walk to the note. Unfolding it, I read the paper:

Hey sleepyhead,
I had work to do so I got up early
See you at breakfast ♡ - Newt

I couldn't help but smile, feeling all giddy inside, a permanent smile presented itself on my face and I let out a little giggle. Placing the note back down, I got ready for the day before heading out to Kitchen to start work.

'Hey Fry,' I greeted the other cook who routinely is up before me 'What are we making today?'

'Hi, Y/n, just pancakes, something easy.' Frypan replied

I nodded in response as we got to work. Ace arrived a few minutes later but decided to do nothing per usual. The pancakes were ready in an instant as Frypan served them to the other Gladers. Walking out of the kitchen and joining our friends, the tables' conversations were filled with talks and laughs.

'Hey guys.' said Newt, walking up to us, his hair messy but he was still so handsome

'Hey Newt.' we all said as he took a seat next to me, placing a hand on my thigh and kissed the temple of my head. The conversations at the table continued as we all slowly finished our breakfast in between mouthfuls.

The dirty plates were stacking up as we all departed to start the day.

I saw a patch of curly hair, peeking out from behind on of the logs in the centre of the Glade. I walked over the boy, who was still deeply focused on whatever he was doing.

'Boo!' I shouted at him, causing him to jump, wide eyes locked on mine, before smiling and laughing with me.

'You shank. You scared me.' Chuck laughed

'Sorry Chuck.' I said laughing sitting down next to him.

'What you got there?' I asked referencing to the object he was fiddling with in his hands. He held the small piece of wood in the palm of his hand. It was small craved little figure, with lots of little details

'Wow, that came out pretty damn good,' I commented astounded by his ability but also shocked that he wasn't a builder. The boy has skills 'What's that for?'

'It's for my parents.' he replied

'You remember your parents?'

'No' he said sadly shaking his head 'Well, I mean, I know I must have them... and wherever they are, I'm sure they miss me, but I can't miss them because I don't remember them.'

'What do you think Minho and Thomas will find in the Maze' looking towards the Maze doors, changing the topic, referring to the fact that the two runners were running the maze today with the new metal device

'I don't, but if there's a way out, Thomas and Minho are gonna find it.' I reassured

'Here.' He said giving me the statue

My brows furrowed, as I took it from him, observing it in my hand.

'Chuck, why would you give this to me?' I questioned

Silence passed before Chuck answer softly 'I can't remember them anyway, but maybe if we find a way out, you can give it to them for me.' I looked up at him, confused, water swelling behind my eyes

'Put out your hand.' I said, before placing the figure in his palm and wrapping his fingers around the wood 'I want you to give that to them yourself. We're gonna get out of here. All of us. Okay?'

The poor boys eyes were starting to water as he slowly nodded yes. We sat it silence, before I left to go to the Med Hut. In that moment, I vowed to myself that I would get Chuck to see his parents and give the figure to them. I vowed to myself that I wouldn't let anything happen to him.
