I woke up in my room… how did I get home? I looked around and saw I was still in my uniform but I was lying in my bed. I tore the sheets off me and got up. I remember the shadows and the blood… oh, God… those grinning faces. They were so dark, so enchantingly horrible. I glanced to the door as it opened and Leona walked in, “You’re awake…”
I nodded, “Yeah.”
“How are you feeling?”
Feel? I almost smiled at the ironic twist of that question, “Okay.”
She frowned, “Can we talk for a second?”
“Sure,” I replied.
She sighed, “When that rebel Shade walked in with you in his arms, my heart broke. He said he saw you running into the bathroom, got worried, and went in after you. He said you fainted or… something, you wrists were all slashed up and bloody… Sweetie, do we need to talk about the Incident?”
My eyes widened, “I didn’t slash my wrists!”
“Look down,” she quietly ordered.
I slowly looked down to see multiple slashes on my wrists, I gasped, “I didn’t do that! I swear, Leona, I didn’t do this…”
“The evidence is plain,” she sniffled, “I failed at being a good guardian… I should have done this long ago. You need to go to the school counselor every sixth period instead of art.”
My jaw dropped, “I didn’t do this, Leona! I swear on my life!”
“Blu!” she screamed and I sat down, “I… I see it now, you’ve been hiding everything.”
“Hiding what?” I said, incredulous.
“Everything?!” she yelled.
Everything? I thought.
“I didn’t do this!” I told her, “I would never do this!”
“No arguing!” she sniffled, “Sixth period tomorrow, you’re going to the counselor!”
She stormed out of the room and slammed the door. I stood there gaping, “Hiding what?”
I looked up and looked into my mirror. I shivered and took it down, I turned it over. I went on my knees and said the only prayer I knew,
“Now I lay down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
I looked at my wrists and touch one of the cut; a shot of pain ran up my arm. I noticed four even cuts ran a small thin one by them. It resembled… a man’s fingernail’s grabbing on. I wondered how Leona didn’t notice, for the second time… the first time ever since I saw Ghost, I felt fear grip me. I began to cringe and fell back into a dark sleep.
And as I slept, I hoped that the shadows that were with me now were the ones who were peaceful, not the ones who hope to hurt me. I tried to forget the darkness in my life and remember the bright things. I dreamt of my sister… of my mother… of the times that I still laughed.
