I felt a bit uncomfortable as Leona began to eat and glare at Shade, “Okay, Shade, are you and my niece just friends?”

            “Yes,” Shade smiled, “Nothing more.”

“You never did anything together…?” she was trying to embarrass me or something.

            “We kissed once,” Shade admitted.

“Please don’t say it was in her room or I will have to get an alarm or something,” she said, frowning.

“No,” he took a bite of his food and shrugged his shoulders, “We agreed to be friends.  And I respect that.”

“And I thought chivalry is dead,” she chuckled.

            “It is,” Shade smirked.

My aunt gave in to her temptations and gave a small smile.  She cracked her neck by turning it to one side, making me jump.  She laughed at me for a second and patted my hand, “Sorry, honey, my neck is a bit… weak.  I have to crack it to make it feel better.”

“Hm,” I said, “What happened to it?”

“I tripped,” she shrugged, “Your mother and I was just teenagers, I was about fifteen and your mother was barely eighteen.  We were so happy to leave the house.  She went to see your father and I waited in the hallway.  I played with my earrings and I realized I dropped one.  I saw it was just down one flight of stairs so I ran, clumsy of me too.  I tripped.  At first I was just on my hands and knees but on the last stair I did a roll and landed on my neck.  I dislocated it and the doctors said it was a wonder I was alive.  Your mom took me to the hospital right in time, and there she had something to check out…”

            “What?”

“She found out she was pregnant,” she said.

            “With me,” I mumbled.

“Yep,” she shrugged, “Your father proposed soon after they realized, they were glowing.  Soon as my neck healed they had the wedding at five months into the pregnancy.  Mom – I mean grandma – said she was going to lose you because she was cursed.  The curse was from having…”

“Sex?” she choked when I said it.

            “I’m… eating,” Shade said, slowly.

“Sorry, I didn’t know you found sexual interaction disgusting.  I thought it was something guys love talk about,” I pointed out.

“Not in front of their best friend’s – especially if they are a girl – aunts,” he said.

“Okay, that’s enough,” Leona gave me a small chuckle, “Yes, because they were having sex before marriage.  Our mother was bad in the brain, she was very religious.  A little bit a…”

“She was a Jesus-freak?” I repeated what I heard Luna call Derek’s grandmother.

“Yeah,” Leona said, looking down, “Well, she also believed your father left because she was cursed… that was so goddamn stupid…”

“He left because he couldn’t take it,” I said.

She just looked at me, “Your father called today.”
