Lucy Chen wasn't expecting to see Isabel Bradford tonight.
The engagement party was in full swing, the rooftop venue glowing with string lights as their closest friends and LAPD family celebrated. Lucy had slipped away from the crowd to get some air, but as she turned a corner, she froze.
There, in the dim light of the rooftop bar, stood Tim.
And Isabel.
And then it happened.
Isabel leaned in.
And kissed him.
Lucy's breath caught in her throat.
Tim didn't kiss her back—Lucy saw that much—but he also didn't push her away fast enough. By the time he stepped back, hands up, Isabel had already pulled away, looking regretful yet hopeful.
Lucy's chest tightened.
She turned before they could see her, walking away quickly. She felt like she couldn't breathe, like her heart was about to shatter right there on the rooftop.
She didn't stop walking until she was outside the building, cold air hitting her skin. Her hands were shaking as she clutched the railing, trying to steady herself.
She wasn't going to cry.
Not here.
Not now.
"Lucy!"
Tim's voice.
She stiffened, closing her eyes for a brief second before turning to face him. He looked frantic, like he had run down the stairs after her.
"Lucy, wait. Whatever you think you saw—"
"I *know* what I saw, Tim," she cut him off, voice sharp. "I saw your ex-wife kissing you."
Tim's jaw tensed. "She kissed me, but I didn't kiss her back."
Lucy let out a bitter laugh. "Yeah, well, you sure took your time pulling away."
His eyes flashed with frustration. "That's not fair—"
"You know what's not fair?" she snapped, her voice rising. "That I had to *see that* on what's supposed to be one of the happiest nights of our lives!"
Tim ran a hand through his hair, stepping closer. "Lucy, *you* are the only one I want. Not her. I didn't want that kiss, and I didn't encourage it. I told her that I was with you, that I was happy."
Lucy swallowed hard, her emotions warring inside her. "And yet, she still thought she had a chance."
"That's not my fault!" Tim's voice was raw now, desperate. "I can't control what she does. But I can control *this*—us. And I'm telling you, you're it for me, Lucy."
Tears burned at the corners of her eyes. "I don't know if I can do this, Tim."
His face fell. "Lucy—"
"I love you," she said, voice breaking. "But I can't be with you if I have to wonder whether you still have unfinished business with your ex-wife."
Tim stepped forward, reaching for her hands, but she stepped back. His expression turned pained. "That's not fair to *us,*" he whispered. "We've fought for this. We don't throw it away because of a mistake that wasn't mine."
Lucy blinked away tears, shaking her head. "I just... I need time."
Tim stared at her for a long moment before exhaling sharply. "I don't want to lose you."
Lucy's voice was barely above a whisper. "Then prove to me that I'm not just another person you'll let go of."
She turned and walked away, leaving Tim standing there, watching her go.
