Part Two:
Lucy stormed off, heart racing, breaths shallow, hands clenched at her sides. Her heels clicked sharply on the pavement as she reached the parking lot, every step fueled by anger, confusion—and something deeper.
Her hand trembled as she pulled out her keys. She fumbled them, and they fell to the ground with a clatter. That was the breaking point.
Her vision blurred. Her chest tightened. It felt like the air had been sucked out of her lungs.
"No—no, not now," she whispered, stumbling back against her car, pressing her palm flat to the cold metal.
The panic rolled in like a tidal wave.
She tried to breathe. In. Out. But it wasn't working.
Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.
Her chest heaved.
Her legs gave out, and she slid down to sit against the driver's door, gripping her knees to her chest, nails digging into her arms.
And then she heard his voice.
"Lucy!" Tim's voice cracked as he ran toward her. "Lucy, hey—hey, I'm here."
He dropped to his knees in front of her without hesitation.
She tried to push him away, overwhelmed, breath hitching. "No—Tim, just—just go. Please, I can't—I can't—"
"Shhh, it's okay," he said gently, voice low and steady. "I've got you. I've got you."
He reached for her, pulling her into his chest as she trembled against him. One arm wrapped securely around her back, while the other cradled her head, guiding it to his shoulder.
"You're okay, Lucy," he murmured into her hair. "Just breathe with me, baby. Just breathe."
His hand rubbed slow, grounding circles on her back.
"You're safe. You're not alone. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
She clutched his shirt in her fists, her sobs shaking them both. "I-I didn't want to see that—I didn't want to feel like this again—I hate this—"
"I know," he whispered, voice breaking with emotion. "I hate that you're hurting. I hate that I let it happen. But listen to me—none of this changes how I feel about you."
His hand found hers and squeezed it gently. "You're my person, Luce. I'm so sorry. I should've done more—I should've pushed her away faster. I just—I didn't want to make a scene and I hesitated, and that was my mistake."
Her breathing started to slow, her sobs softening as he rocked her gently in his arms.
"I'm not in love with her. I'm in love with *you.* And I'm gonna keep showing up, every day, no matter how messy it gets. I'm not going anywhere, Lucy Chen."
She let out a shaky breath and leaned deeper into him, forehead resting against his neck.
"Promise?" she whispered.
His arms tightened around her, his lips brushing the top of her head.
"Always."
Lucy's breathing had slowed, but her body was still trembling. Her face was pressed to Tim's chest, her fists still curled in the fabric of his shirt like letting go would make everything collapse again.
