"Auntie Gem says it's time to bring out the cake." Dominique walked inside the kitchen and stumbled across her dad speaking with Solana. She stood there, frozen momentarily, as she looked at them both. "Is everything okay in here?"
Solana glanced at Dominique with a solemn expression. She didn't respond to her. Instead, she left the kitchen. Dominique stood there discombobulated, with her eyes glued on her dad.
"What was that about?" Dominique questioned her father. She walked further into the kitchen with her brows knitted. Dominick didn't seem bothered by Solana walking out. He continued to adjust the cake inside the box. "Hey, I'm talking to you. What did you say to her?"
Hearing Dominique speak with such a stern tone threw him off. He pinpointed his eyes on his daughter and said, "You have no right to speak to me that way. I am your father."
Dominique searched her father's eyes, saying, "You said something to her. I'm sure it was something disrespectful. She didn't seem happy to me—she had a hurt look."
Dominick only shrugged. He didn't feel the need to apologize. From his perspective, Solana was in the wrong. She was the one who was making treacherous moves.
"Solana is Grant's girlfriend now—whether you like it or not. She's my friend, too. What's so wrong with that? You rather him be miserable with Annika instead of being happy with Solana?"
"He wouldn't have gotten shot if it wasn't for her." Dominick rasped.
"Her?" Dominique tried to understand who he was referring to. She figured it was Solana but needed a confirmation.
"Solana. The fingerprints came back, and they matched this guy named Obie. Solana had been seen with his brother, who is also a suspect. The detectives caught her on camera with him right before that Montgomery kid was killed at the college party. The same bullet casings match the ones that injured your brother. She's been helping those Baptiste boys rob and kill men—they're all brothers."
Dominique held a stupefied look engraved on her face. She stared at her dad as he continued to speak about the situation. She was still upset about her baby brother getting shot. Hearing that Solana may have been connected to his attempted murder caused her to grow cautious. However, she didn't want to side with her dad. She didn't want him to be right about Solana. She loved her as a friend and sister and did not want to believe what she heard.
"I'm sure it's a mix-up," Dominique muttered, rubbing her chin. "Solana would never do anything like that."
"It's not a mix-up. You don't mix-up situations like this." Dominick corrected his daughter. "The law caught up with her, and that's all that matters. I'm not sure why Grant brought her here. Wait until everyone hears about it—they'll want to kick her ass."
"Don't say anything about it," Dominique warned her father sternly. Dominick only frowned without saying anything. "Dad, you have to make sure your facts are one hundred percent correct before implying these allegations—they're pretty serious."
Dominique softened her facial expression and added, "All I'm saying is Solana deserves a fair trial—a chance to defend herself. I'm not sure what she had going on with the suspect and his brothers. I would like to hear her side of the story before trying to burn her at the stake over hearsay by the detectives. Give her a chance—at least do that."
"Hearsay? Sweetie, you realize they caught her running out of the building with the suspect's brother?"
"That doesn't mean anything." Dominique shook her head.
