[ Solana is the new name. I know...I'm sorry for changing it. In the middle of the story is insane since we're all so attached to her being referred to as "Summer". BUT I had to change it. ]
Solana allowed her intrusive thoughts to take over. She used her hand to scoop the strawberry syrup on her index finger, swiping away the heart. Grant watched as she sucked the sugary liquid from her digit. He waited patiently for an answer, but she didn't bother to give him one.
"So, what do you say?" Grant questioned her. He sat there looking composed, but he was a nervous wreck. He didn't want Solana to reject him again.
"I dunno..." She trailed off with a shrug. Solana eased her eyes on the giant gentlemen. Her face was subtle. She was behaving nonchalantly-as if the cake wasn't a surprise to her. Grant assumed. He really couldn't read her expression.
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is..." She trailed off, grabbing the fork. "I'm not ready to accept." She cut a small slice from the cake and slid it into her mouth. She closed her eyes briefly, enjoying the moist and fluffy cake.
Grant didn't speak. He sat there, his eyes trained on Solana as he leaned into the chair. She was behaving weirdly. This wasn't her usual act or mannerisms. This Solana was...being insensitive and irrational.
"Go be with Annika-the woman you spent eight years with." Solana voiced.
Grant frowned. He didn't want to be with Annika. He was over her and their relationship. He didn't care about the time they shared. He was partially miserable during their relationship and had no plans to return to something so virulent.
A few nudges caught him off guard. Grant rubbed his eyes and blinked a few times. Immediately, he pinpointed Solana, who looked concerned. He glanced at the square dish and realized the heart was still there-perfectly shaped and untouched.
Wait a minute, I was hallucinating! Grant said to himself as he continued to blink. Solana, still feeling worried, scooted near him. She ran her hand across his back.
"Are you okay?" She whispered to him as her eyes examined his handsome features.
"...Yeah." He managed to push out. "I was just...in a daze."
"I guess you had too much to drink, huh?" She continued, glancing at the alcoholic drink beside his half-empty dish.
Grant rubbed his face and said, "Probably."
Solana eyed him in silence for a brief moment. When Grant realized she was checking him out, he decided to mirror her behavior. He stared at her intensely, loving how beautiful she looked under the dim light. Her hair was pulled into a bun-he was able to make out her round, fluffy face and that dimpled chin.
"Do you think we deserve each other?" Grant inquired.
Solana was stunned by his question. She couldn't hide the puzzled expression on her face. She raised her brows while cocking her head to the side.
"Why are you asking me that?"
"I just want to know." He responded calmly as he wrapped his arm around her body. Solana felt comfortable. She loved being in his warm embrace. "I don't want to lose you."
"You're not going to lose me." She voiced softly. "What makes you think you're going to lose me?"
"You haven't said anything about the cake." He pointed out, glancing at the strawberry cake slice.
"Oh." Solana's mouth widened in bewilderment. "I was going to give you an answer, but you started looking off. I thought something was wrong."
Grant just sighed and shook his head. He was thinking the worst and automatically assumed she would say no. Solana was a thorough young woman. She didn't like jumping into relationships without much thought-Grant figured that out long ago. He knew she would more than likely say no instead of yes.
