"Try to touch it. Talk to it. It can't harm you with the restraints."
Fuck me.. I'm not trusting that.
"We'll be keeping an eye on your brainwaves during the process to see why the fungus has affected you differently."
"You want me... to touch it?" I ask, failing to keep my voice steady. "Why me? Why do I have to do it?" I tilt my head, questioning them. "One of you could do it, since you're so confident with the restraints. Or is there a reason you're hiding behind a window?"
Suddenly, a door swings open, and Alex storms in. The conversation is muffled, but I can make out the gist of it.
"What's going on? Why is she in there?" Alex sounds furious.
"You don't have clearance to be in here. Please go tend to the other kids," some dude answers. "This is unethical! She's a child. Why are you putting her in such a dangerous position?!" Alex exclaims.
"We don't need to explain ourselves to you. Please escort him out."
Alex shoves the dude off and mumbles something as another woman enters. I turn my attention back to the window.
"And if I refuse?" I ask. "Then we'll see if someone else in your group is more willing."
These guys really piss me off. Using children as their little guinea pigs? I'd rather it be me than the others. I slowly approach the infected person.
"Uh... Hi." It doesn't respond, just continues shrieking and yelling. It lunges at me, but I back up. I turn to the window. "I'm not touching it. This is stupid."
Suddenly, the restraints come loose. Oh shit. It runs towards me, and I swoop low, kicking its legs and knocking it down.
"What are you doing?!" I look up at the window and spot her.
That woman from the sorrel house. Why is she here? Why is she with them?
I'm lost in my thoughts and don't notice it coming from behind me. It grabs my face, pulling me to the ground.
They meant for this to happen... from the beginning. All of it.
"Ha..." It's almost funny.
All of this... is their fault.
