Cassie woke up feeling empty. Not sick just dull. She expected a headache or to be throwing up, like she saw in the movies after teens drank more than they should. The feeling of emptiness spread throughout her entire being as she threw the covers off herself and pushed off her bed. She headed for the kitchen for some breakfast, she thought that would shake the numbness off.
Robby was already sitting at the circular table, eating Cheerios with strawberries. He heard Cassie's footsteps creaking against the old floorboards and turned his head to look at her.
"Morning kid" he smiled gently, "how you feelin?"
"Fine, I guess. I don't know" she shrugged. She grabbed a bowl and poured some special k with milk and brought it over to the table. Taking a seat across from her brother.
"Let me know if you need anything" Robby took another bite of cereal. Cassie went to take a bite too but couldn't do it. She didn't want it anymore, the thought of eating it made her sick. "You ok?" Robby noticed the change in her.
"Yea I just don't want this" she sighed, leaning back in her chair. For the first time that morning, Cassie checked her phone. Anthony had texted her a few times but there were 27 missed calls from her mother and 50 texts. The weird thing was there was also two missed calls from her dad with messages after each saying pick up now. The calls were from ten minutes ago right before she woke up. Cassie called her dad back right away.
"Hey what's wrong?" Cassie asked into her phone when she heard her dad pick up. "Where are you"
"I'm at the dojo where you and your brother should be" Cassie looked at the time then to her brother.
"Shit we forgot, we'll be there in 15" Cassie jumped up from her chair. "Robby, practice, get ready now" she whispered yelled to Robby and the two both booked it to their rooms to change.
"Hurry up" her dad yelled and hung up the phone. Cassie grabbed leggings and a hoodie out of her dresser. She put on her clothes and tied her hair back into a ponytail. She bolted for her sneakers and her already packed bag. She threw on her shoes and then rushed to the bathroom to brush her teeth. After the siblings were ready they booked it to the car and headed to the dojo.
The car was quiet at first. Cassie scrolled instagram while Robby drove. As he watched the road he thought of how he could bring up last night, he knew they needed to talk about it. He also knew he only had 8 minutes left to mention it, so he just went for it.
"Wanna talk about last night" He turned his head quickly to look at her. He saw the way she froze for a second, it hurt to see you hurting.
"I don't know" she mumbled, turning her phone off. "You're gonna make me talk about it anyway so just got it over with" she sighed looking to her brother.
"I know it sucks but I just want to know what happened" Robby's eyes were back on the road. He only had 6 minutes to get the convo going before they'd have to wait until later and he knew she'd fully avoid him until he forgot about it.
"Mom happened, she wouldn't leave me alone and I got fed up. I was drunk and I yelled at her" Cassie explained. "I told her that I don't want to see her again and that I want her to leave me alone. The worst part is she's still spamming me" Cassie opened her phone. "Look! 15 texts in 30 minutes, she's lost her damn mind"
