Jayson
"Why didn't you pick up your aunt?" Uncle Ben asks firmly. He crosses his arms and his sagging jaw is clenched.
I close the front door behind me and look at him.
"Sorry I..." It was just as I was climbing the stairs outside of the that I checked my phone. Marilyn and I went to Tooty Fruity after the stay with her mom so I was kind of caught up in the moment.
"No, you're not." I look behind him at Aunt Em. She's here now so...
"Uncle Ben-"
"She had to walk home from the station in the dark. It's night for God's sake Jayson!" His face turns red and he looks like he wants to hit me.
"It's alright, honey." Aunt Em says getting up. "I made it. He just forgot, that's all."
"No, it's not," Uncle Ben snaps, talking to me more than Aunt Em. "Jayson you need to be more responsible. Just yesterday I called you asking you to go the the store and get some groceries. You came home with nothing. Nothing!"
I stand here motionlessly and helplessly. I really want so badly to tell them that I'm Spider-Man but I know that if I do, they'll freak. I'm not so worried that they'll tell anyone, because I know they won't, but they'll be paranoid and worry more about me. I took on a 400 pound lizard, I think I can take a bunch New York drunkies.
But stills I know exactly what aunt Em would say: "How can you possibly take care of other people when you don't know how to take care of yourself first?"
"You are just like your father, y'know." Uncle Ben continues. "Stubborn and irrespsonsible." He breathes. "He was smart and could find his way through situations, though. Not like you."
"Excuse me?" Now I talk. " My father was a great man! His and my mother's deaths were tragedies. Don't disrespect him like that."
"At least he had sense."
"You two-" I cut Aunt Em off, my body growing hot with fury.
"Anyone with sense would leave wouldn't stay here listening to you talk trash about my father!" I reopen the glass door and as I'm storming down the stairs, slam it shut behind me. I hear it's glass shattering to pieces and hitting the concrete at different times.
"Jayson!" Uncle Ben calls. I don't bother looking back. I just go wherever my feet-and anger-take me. My father was a great man, dad, and scientist, but he's also dead. And so is mom. I can't believe they'd leave me like this. Everything would be perfect is they were still here. I'd be living with them, we'd be a family, not like me and my aunt and uncle but the way families should be. I can't lose anyone anymore. I've lost so much already. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to someone else that I love.
I find myself entering a Seven-Eleven and walking straight to the drinks isle. Picking up an ounce of milk, I watch as a man picks up a can of Cherry Coke and walks cautiously to the cashier. There's no one else in the store but us three.
I walk to the cashier before he does and angrily take out $3.00 from my jacket pocket.
He gives me a 50 cents back as change and I take my milk and move aside for the other guy to pay, but I'm suspicious of him. He's wearing plain black sunglasses indoors and it's dark out and something tells me something really bad is about to happen.
Darn, these spider senses.
Nevertheless, linger around to see what happens.
The guy knocks over the cashier's drink and it spills on the floor on the inside of the desk.
