Chapter 31: "Spring Formal"

Chapter 31

Harry's POV

*Flashback*

"You know Harry, last night I was thinking and I said to myself: Helen, you have no date to the spring formal. Harry just broke up with his girlfriend so he has no date to the formal either. So why not kill two birds with one stone?" Helen was rambling and you could clearly see that she was nervous. It was adorable, if I might comment on it. I knew what she was going to suggest and I had already decided to ask her to go to spring formal with me, but since she beat me to it I might as well enjoy the whole little scene, right?

I watched her steadily while she fiddled with her fingers. "Sooo?" I prompted on. Her eyes glided around the room and then settled on the ground. "Well, you know maybe you... well, no. Maybe I could be like.. you know" a smile spread on my lips. It was really cute how she always had a hard time asking me stuff. We were best friend for goodness sake, she could ask me anything and I would try to give it to her. I would do anything for Helen. 

That was enough torture. I decided to stop her misery.

"Helen, would you accept to be my date to the Spring Formal please?" I asked. Helen let out a relieved breath and nodded her head. "Yes, I would" she said in a whisper. "Thank you" I said with a wink. "No, Harry. Thank you" and then she stepped closer and  hugged me. I stood there frozen for a moment and then my arms circled her body and I hugged her back.

Helen's parents were excited. Me on the other hand... well let's just say that saying I'm nervous would be an understatement. When Helen's mother announced that Helen was ready I stood up from the couch stiffly. But that was forgotten as I watched the most beautiful girl I have ever seen appear from the upstairs hall. I could only stare while she descended down the stairwell. It didn't look like she was walking down the steps. No, it looked as if she were floating in her beige/light peach colored dress. 

I was speechless. It was when she was standing in front of me, watching me expectantly, that I cleared my throat and talked. 

"You look beautiful" I said softly, watching her in awe. My best friend looked like a freaking princess. She blushed at my compliment and thanked me, looking down at the ground.

Her parents insisted that we take pictures together and I was too distracted looking at Helen to protest. After a couple of blinding flashes I leaned in close to her ear, "You'll be the prettiest girl at the dance. Everyone will be jealous. Girls because they're not as stunning as you, and guys because they're not there with you" I said. Helen smiled timidly and hooked her hand on my arm. "Well, Styles. I'm quite sure girls won't be jealous just because of my pretty dress... I must admit, you clean up nice" Helen said in an impressed tone. I was satisfied with that statement so I didn't answer besides a slight chuckle. Then I led the beautiful princess out, so I could take her to the dance.

*End of Flashback*

We were both 16 back then. We had a lot of fun that night. We danced until our feet hurt and laughed until we couldn't breathe. It was at the end, when they were playing a slow song, that I had brought Helen's body closer to mine. I circled her waist with my arms. We swayed at the rhythm of the song and Helen rested her head on my shoulder. I had never felt more in peace... as if I had everything I needed to be happy. Of course I was too stupid to realize that it was Helen. Helen was my happiness.

But I knew that now, and I would do everything in my power to win her back. No matter what it takes.
