Chapter 1
Harry's POV
"Come on babe, what did I do now?" I asked my girlfriend of six months through the phone, as I ran a hand through my disheveled curly hair.
"Don't play innocent, Harry! You were out with Helen last night, weren't you?" she yelled with something that sounded a lot like hatred, which really took me aback. She hated Helen?
"Georgia, why are you making such a big deal out of this? Helen is my best friend. Has been since we're eight" I repeated for what might be the third time.
"You think I don't know that? I'm pretty sure I remember when we were kids and you always liked her better" she shouted.
I rolled my eyes.
Yeah, she's been jealous of Helen all her life. No one knows why though, because Helen doesn't feel that way for her at all. They used to be best friends when they were kids but then one day Georgia decided to end their friendship...
That same day, I promised Helen we would always be best friends. I can still remember how it hurt me to see her crying. I had found her sitting in the middle of the sidewalk adjacent to my house. Her knees were all scraped from falling while running her pink little bicycle and her brown hair that was shoulder-length back then, kept falling in front of her eyes.
"Harry!" Georgia growled, effectively snapping me back to reality.
"I told you babe, it was nothing! She was feeling a little gloom and I took her out so she could get distracted. She's going through a lot of stuff right now. I'm asking you to please respect my friendship with her since it means so much to me. By you being my girlfriend I would expect that you care enough about me to respect her. I'm not asking you for much, babe" I said cautiously.
There was a moment of silence from the other end of the call and I knew I had her.
"I'm sorry Harry... I just get a little jealous of her. Sometimes I feel like she means more to you than I do" she whispered.
I sighed deeply.
"Well, stop being so insecure! I'm with you, so you should stop these stupid little scenes every time I spend time with my best friend" there was an obvious warning in my tone as I told her this, because I was honestly getting real sick of the same shit all the time.
If she thought that I would push Helen away and out of my life just because we were dating now, then she was wrong. Not her, or anyone for that matter, would break our friendship.
I will always keep my promise.
Helen's POV
Harry walked inside after ending the call and sliding his phone in his jeans' back pocket. He then lifted his gaze to look at me and proceeded on giving me what was supposed to be a reassuring smile.
But I knew better.... Georgia had heard about our outing, and she was not happy about it.
"I'm truly sorry" I whispered, my words honest.
I hadn't even finished uttering the words when he was already shaking his head.
"Why?" he asked, his eyebrows knitting together in a frown.
"I keep getting you in trouble with her and that's not what I want. I should keep my stuff to myself and not drag you along" I said softly.
"That's the stupidest thing you've ever said Helen and you are the smartest person that I know. You better not hide anything from me because I want to be there for you when you need me, always" he assured.
I sighed.
"I can take care of myself Styles, it's not like I need you to protect me from every little bad thing that happens to me" I said peering into those deep emerald green eyes.
I saw his eyes fill with hurt for a split second, but when he blinked, it was gone.
"You're stuck with me for the rest of your life, even if you like it or not, so you might as well get over it" he said this dismissively as he busied himself in his living room.
"Harry, I didn't mean that I didn't want you in my life. You know that. But you have other people that need more of your time... people who are more important" I stated, looking away, hiding the pain that caused me to say those words.
It was the most painful thing I could ever say out loud; to acknowledge that I'm not his number one girl anymore because he has a girlfriend now.
I could almost feel my heart breaking at the realization.
"Hey, no. Don't even say that! No one is more important than you! Okay... maybe my mom and my sister, yeah. But besides them, no one. Not even Georgia" he said whilst taking my face in his hands.
What? Did he just say that? Did he mean it?
But my hope was instantly crushed.
"So what are we going to do now sis?" Harry asked, a clueless but beautiful smile forming on his lips.
Bam!
A low blow.
My heart gave a loud bump of despair but I smiled through my pain.
That's all he would ever see me like; his best friend, his sister.
I should know better then to expect anything else, but there is always a string of hope in my heart that one day he'll realize that we were meant for each other. That we were two pieces of the same puzzle. But it's never going to happen. It's disgustingly obvious that I've been kidding myself all this time.
Pain.
Heartbreak.
These are only two of the countless reasons why you should never fall in love with your best friend.
