"Time to rest your body baba," Beyonce said, already pulling the thin hospital blanket up to Blue's chin.
My heart ached. How could I explain to an eight-year-old why her family was split between two houses, and one "Mr. Shawn" who wasn't her father? It was messy, even for me. For her, it must be nonsensical.
"No, I'm not tired," Blue protested, her eyes wide on me. "Daddy, why don't you live with us? Like on TV, where the mommy and daddy live together?"
Beyonce shot me a warning look, a silent command to shut down the conversation
She was an expert at navigating Blue's innocent but piercing questions, usually by deflecting or distracting. But this one hit too close to home, for all of us.
"Blue, baby, we've talked about this," Beyonce said, her voice softer but firm. "Our family is special, remember? Not all families look the same."
"But I want our family to look like the ones on TV," Blue insisted, her lower lip beginning to tremble. The cast on her arm suddenly seemed like a heavier burden.
"Baba, mommy's right," I interjected gently, trying to meet her gaze. "You've had a big day. Your arm needs to rest and heal. And daddy... daddy loves you very much, no matter where you live." I reached out, gently stroking her hair away from her face.
Beyonce's hand clamped down on my wrist, a subtle but undeniable warning. Her eyes drilled into mine. "Y/N, she needs to rest. We can discuss this later." The 'this' wasn't just about Blue's question, it was about everything that had just exploded with Kelly.
"But mommy, I just want to know," Blue whimpered, her voice cracking.
"And you will, sweetie, when you're older and can understand big-person things," Beyonce said, her voice clipped. She pulled the blanket higher. "For now, you need to rest. Doctor said you need sleep for your arm to heal, remember?"
"Mm-kay," Blue mumbled, her eyes still fixated on me for a moment before they slowly drifted closed, the tears unshed. The exhaustion of her injury had finally claimed her.
As soon as her breathing evened out, Beyonce pulled her hand away from my wrist, her gaze hardening. "You just can't help yourself, can you?" she hissed, her voice barely a whisper but laced with a venom that made me flinch.
"She's my child, Bey! She has a right to ask questions, and I have a right to answer them!" I retorted, equally quiet but just as furious. The air in the small room crackled with unspoken accusations.
"Not when it complicates things! Not when you've got Kelly throwing a tantrum and threatening divorce because of your inability to keep your mouth shut!"
"My inability? You were the one who made the teacher call my phone because yours was conveniently out of reach!"
"Don't you dare put this on me!" she snarled, her eyes blazing. "I protect what's mine, and that includes Blue's peace of mind. You think it's easy trying to explain our... arrangement to an eight-year-old? Especially when you're already tied to someone else!"
"And what about what's mine? What about Titan? What about Kelly? Do you have any idea what I just walked out on?" My voice was trembling. "She threw her ring at my feet, Bey. Her wedding ring."
Beyonce scoffed, a cold, dismissive sound. "Oh, please. Kelly's always been overly dramatic. She'll get over it. She always does."
"This isn't just 'overly dramatic'! This is our life! And you just... you just broke it, like Shawn broke your phone!"
Her eyes narrowed. "You did not just compare my marriage to a broken phone, Y/N. Don't push me. Not here. Not now." She glanced at Blue's sleeping form. "We have a child to get home. We'll discuss our situations when Blue is safe and sound, and not in earshot."
