My world was a kaleidoscope of glowing screens and late-night raids if you sliced me open, you'd probably find an intricate network of wires instead of veins, powered by Mountain Dew and the thrill of a well-executed combo. I was a gamer, pure and unadulterated, and perfectly content in my digital domain
Except for one corner of it, which was reserved for Giselle
Giselle. Even her name felt soft, a whispered melody in the otherwise sharp-edged symphony of my life. We'd met through a mutual online friend – a bizarre, serendipitous glitch in the matrix – and somehow, against all odds, our connection had blossomed. We were long distance; she was always vague about where exactly she was, just "somewhere busy." But distance was just a number, right? Or so I told myself
Our relationship thrived on FaceTime calls. Or, rather, my FaceTime calls. Giselle's would always come through, but her face was invariably a shadowy outline, swallowed by darkness
"Bad lighting," she'd murmur, her voice a low, husky purr that made the hairs on my arms stand up
"Just wanted to hear your voice, baby." I never questioned it. Love, I figured, didn't need perfect lighting. It just needed a connection, and ours felt as real as anything I'd ever known. She listened to my endless ramblings about game lore, celebrated my epic wins, and even pretended to understand why I needed that rare loot drop. She was my calm in the gaming storm
Life was good. Or, at least, it was predictable. Until Amiah burst into it like a glitter bomb.Amiah was my best friend, a whirlwind of vibrant energy and infectious enthusiasm. She was the kind of person who hugged you for too long, touched your arm when she laughed, and spontaneously decided we absolutely, unequivocally had to go to the Cowboy Carter tour in Atlanta
"Y/N! This is Beyoncé! Queen Bey! You can't live your life staring at a screen when there's this happening!" she'd declared, waving her phone with the ticket confirmation in my face
I grumbled, but secretly, a part of me was excited. Being a recluse had its perks, but even I couldn't deny the allure of a Beyoncé concert. Plus, Amiah was relentless
"You need to touch grass, Y/N," she'd said, pulling me off my gaming chair. "And by grass, I mean the floor of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium."
So, armed with two tickets and a healthy dose of skepticism about the real world, I packed a bag. Giselle had called the night before we left
"You're really going to this concert?" Giselle had asked, her voice a low murmur through the phone
"Beyoncé, Giselle! It's the Cowboy Carter tour! And it's in Atlanta, so Amiah and I jumped on tickets," I'd replied, practically bouncing in my chair. "It's four nights, gonna be epic."
"Be safe, babe," she'd said, her voice a little softer than usual. "Have fun. I wish I could be there.""Me too," I'd replied, meaning it. But she was always so busy. I just wished her schedule wasn't so... opaque
Atlanta was a symphony of humid air, car horns, and the distant hum of excitement that only a major concert series could generate. Amiah was practically vibrating with anticipation. She was a touchy-feely person, a natural connector. She'd link her arm through mine, pat my back when she made a point, and clap me on the shoulder even when it wasn't strictly necessary. With Amiah, proximity was just part of the package
The first night of the Cowboy Carter tour was everything Amiah promised and more. The stadium was a sea of shimmering cowboys hats and sequined denim. When Beyoncé descended onto the stage, a golden goddess bathed in light, the roar of the crowd was deafening. Her voice, her presence, her sheer power – it was hypnotic. I found myself actually putting my phone away, completely immersed. Amiah was singing every lyric, dancing like nobody was watching, and occasionally grabbing my arm to emphasize a particularly epic moment
"Y/N! Can you believe this?!" she'd shriek over the music, squeezing my bicep
It was an incredible night. My ears were ringing, my feet ached, but I felt a vibrancy I hadn't known I was missing
Later that night, back in the hotel, my phone buzzed. It was Giselle. Her picture, the shadowy one, appeared on the screen. I answered, a tired smile on my face
"Hey, you," I said, flopping onto the bed. "That was insane. Absolutely incredible."
"I saw the stories you put up," her voice, a low rumble, filled my ear. "Sounded fun."
"It was!" I enthused, still buzzing. "Amiah was going wild. She's such a fangirl. We were right there, practically stage side. She kept grabbing my arm, yelling, 'Y/N, look!' It was great."
There was a beat of silence. Longer than usual
"She... she touches you a lot" Giselle stated, her voice flat How would she know that? I'd posted a few snippets on my story, but mostly of the stage
My brow furrowed. "Uh, yeah? Amiah's just like that. She's very expressive, you know? It's just her way." " I chuckled, trying to brush off the weirdness. A flicker of something odd went through me, but I attributed it to my own exhaustion. She must have seen Amiah in some blurry background of my story, perhaps. I shrugged it off.
Another pause. "Right," she said, her tone unreadable. "Just... stay safe, okay?"
"Of course, I will." I tried to lighten the mood. "You sound a little distant tonight. Everything okay?"
"Just tired," she replied quickly. "Long day. I'll call you tomorrow, baby. Get some sleep."And then she hung up
I stared at my phone, a faint unease prickling at the back of my neck. It was a weird question
