The low thrum of the studio speakers vibrated through the floor, a familiar pulse against Beyoncé's feet.
Her voice, a silken ribbon of sound, coiled around the melody, each note a deliberate brushstroke on the sonic canvas.
Across the control room, the mixer adjusted a knob, his head bobbing to the rhythm. She caught his gaze, a fleeting spark of admiration, then glanced towards the door. Y/n wasn't there. He hadn't been for weeks, not in his usual spot, a silent sentinel by the soundproof glass.
The absence was a hollow ache, a constant hum beneath the music, louder than any bass line.
It started subtly, a shift in his posture, a tightening around his eyes when she mentioned a late-night session.
Then the words, sharp and unexpected, had cleaved the air between them.
"Another late night, Bey?" His voice, usually a comforting rumble, had been edged with something akin to steel
He stood by the kitchen island, a half-empty coffee mug cold in his hand.
She paused, her fingers hovering over her phone screen. "Just finishing up a track with Malik. He's got some fresh ideas."
"Malik." The name tasted like ash on his tongue. "The one who called you 'the most desired woman on the planet' in that interview?"
Her jaw tightened. "It was a compliment, Y/n. He was being professional."
"Professional?" He scoffed, a short, bitter sound. "Professional doesn't usually involve public declarations of desire for another man's wife."
"You're being ridiculous." She snapped, her voice rising. "This is my work. This is what I do. You're my security, not my keeper."
His eyes, usually warm pools of devotion, turned to glacial chips. "Your security? Right. I almost forgot that." He set the mug down with a clatter that echoed in the silent kitchen. "Consider my services... terminated, I quit."
The words hung in the air, cold and final. She watched him turn, his back a rigid wall, and walk out of the room. The front door clicked shut with a soft, devastating finality.
That was six weeks ago.
Now, the silence in the studio, broken only by the playback, felt heavy, suffocating.
Each time her phone buzzed, her heart lurched, bracing for the call, the word she dreaded: divorce
It never came.
Instead, he moved into the guest room, a silent pact of separation without the legal paperwork.
Billion, their five-year-old, was the fragile bridge between them. His boisterous laughter, his innocent questions, momentarily shattered the invisible wall.
"Daddy, look!" Billion held up a crayon drawing of a blue monster with six arms. "He's eating all the cookies!"
Y/n, perched on the edge of the sofa, a book open on his lap, offered a genuine smile. "That's a very hungry monster, son."
Beyoncé, watching from the doorway, felt a familiar ache. He looked at Billion with such warmth, such complete affection.
When his gaze flickered to her, it was a polite, distant acknowledgment, devoid of the familiar spark, the intimate language they once shared.
Every interaction felt like treading on glass. They still picked up Billion from pre-school, still made his favorite blueberry pancakes on Saturdays, but the easy camaraderie between them, the shared glances, the quiet touches, those were gone.
