The first tremor was a sound, a high-pitched shriek that knifed through the rhythmic thud-thud-thud of Y/n's conditioning class. It wasn't the usual playful yelp or frustrated grunt of a teenager pushing their limit. This was raw, laced with panic. Then came the stampede.
Small, wiry bodies, usually so focused on their burpees and sprints, transformed into a terrified flood, pouring into the gym from the main hallway. "Coach! Coach Y/n!" they gasped, chest heaving, faces pale.
"What in hell is going on?" Y/n roared, his voice cutting through the rising din. He was a man built for command, broad-shouldered and solid, his presence usually enough to quell any unrest. But this was different.
"It's Mrs. Knowles! And Ms. Rowland!" A sophomore, barely reaching his shoulder, got the words out in a rush. "They're trying to stop a fight in the lunchroom! It's gone crazy!"
Mrs. Knowles. His Bey.
A cold dread squeezed Y/n's gut, instantly eclipsing the controlled irritation he felt at the disruption. He remembered, sharp as a shard of glass, their conversation just last week. Her hand, warm and reassuring, covering his on the kitchen counter. "Promise me," he'd said, his voice quiet, almost pleading. "Promise you'll stay out of it. No high school drama, Bey. Please." And she'd looked at him, her eyes soft with understanding, and nodded. "I promise, Y/n. I'll be careful."
Of course, she hadn't listened.
He didn't wait for another word. He was already moving, a blur of muscle and purpose, pushing through the terrified students, his gym shirt flapping behind him. The screams intensified as he neared the cafeteria doors, a cacophony of adolescent fury and adult alarm.
He burst through, the chaotic scene hitting him like a physical blow. Tables were overturned, trays scattered, a slippery mosaic of spilled food underfoot. Ms. Rowland, a willowy English teacher, was clinging to one boy, her face contorted in a desperate plea. And then he saw her.
Bey, his beautiful, brave Bey, stood between two hulking juniors, arms outstretched, a protective shield. Her hair, usually so neatly pulled back, had come loose, framing a face etched with fierce determination. For a split second, Y/n felt a surge of pride, quickly followed by a tidal wave of terror. Seven times, Y/n. Seven times we've been here. Just be careful. Please, just be careful.
As he watched, one of the boys, a hulking tackle from his own football team, lunged at his rival. Bey, caught in the sudden, violent surge, stumbled. Her eyes, wide with shock, met Y/n's just as a smaller, wirier boy, attempting to push past her, shoved. Not with malice, perhaps, but with enough force to send her off balance, her feet tangling in the debris.
She fell.
It wasn't a graceful tumble. It was an awkward, heavy collapse. Her hands shot out, but found only air, and she landed with a sickening thud, a sharp intake of breath escaping her lips. But it wasn't just the impact that froze Y/n's blood. It was the way she clutched her rounded stomach, her face whitening, a low moan escaping her.
Everything stopped. The fight, the screams, the shouts – all of it silenced, replaced by a collective, horrified gasp. All eyes, wide and terrified, swivelled towards Y/n.
The air crackled.
Y/n didn't remember moving. One second he was at the door, the next he was across the room, a primal roar tearing from his throat. He saw red. All rational thought dissolved, replaced by a blind, consuming rage. This boy, this child, had pushed his wife. Had pushed their baby.
He grabbed the boy, the one who'd sent her sprawling, hauling him off his feet with a force born of pure fury. The boy, small and bewildered, let out a choked cry, suspended in Y/n's iron grip. "You little bastard," Y/n snarled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sent shivers through the stunned audience. He didn't care that he was yelling at a child, didn't care about the professionalism he usually maintained. All he saw was the pain on Bey's face, the fear in her eyes, the potential loss of everything they had fought so hard for.
