Ya'll can breathe now

The air in the recording studio was thick with the scent of ambition, stale coffee, and something far more potent – an unspoken history. Beyoncé, Queen Bey, the woman the world adored, laughed, a sound like wind chimes, as Y/N leaned in, his arm a casual, proprietary weight around her shoulders. His fingers, long and artistic, brushed the swell of her hip, a gesture so fluid, so ingrained, it might have been an extension of her own movement. Too often, Jay found, it felt precisely like that

Jay watched from the plush leather couch, a knot tightening in his gut. He was a man accustomed to control, to dominance, to having the last word. But with Y/N, he was perpetually on the back foot.

Y/N was Beyoncé's best friend, her confidant, the other half of a bond that pre-dated Jay, pre-dated the empire they'd built, perhaps even pre-dated Bey herself. It was the way Y/N would lean in, whispering something that would make Beyonce's lips curve into a smile only he seemed capable of coaxing.

A deep, soulful smile that mirrored the very first one he'd ever seen her wear, back before the world knew her name, back when they were just two kids, navigating first loves and first heartbreaks, and for her, a first touch that was undeniably Y/N's. He'd been her first everything that mattered, a fact she carried like a secret tattoo on her soul. He knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that Beyoncé had lost her virginity to Y/N. A silent ghost in their marriage bed.

Jay had seen the way Y/N's gaze would linger, deep and knowing, only for his hand to settle, just for a beat too long, on the curve of her butt when he thought no one was looking. Or, more accurately, when he thought Jay wouldn't dare call him on it.

Y/N was too... masculine. Too much of a presence, a force that Jay, despite his own considerable stature, struggled to eclipse. Jay was the strategist, the mogul, the businessman. Y/N was the artist, the wild card, the raw, untamed current that ran beneath Beyoncé's polished surface.

Their friendship had been the unspoken reason for many of Y/N's past heartbreaks. Jay had heard the stories.

Girlfriends coming and going, all of them eventually reaching the breaking point of the "Beyoncé factor." It only took Beyoncé to say she didn't like one of them, a casual remark, a slight frown, and Y/N would, almost without conscious thought, let them go. A chilling testament to his devotion, or perhaps, his possession.

Beyoncé loved Jay. But Jay knew, with a clarity that stung, that she was in love with Y/N. It was a distinction that carved a canyon between them, a chasm that no amount of success or shared history could fill.

The engagement party was a blur of flashing lights, forced smiles, and the clinking of champagne glasses. Jay, triumphant, felt the weight of Bey's hand in his, the diamond on her finger a glittering promise. He caught Y/N's eye across the room. Y/N didn't bother to smile. His jaw was set, his gaze direct, unimpressed. He'd made it known, subtly and not so subtly, that he didn't like Jay.

A familiar arm wrapped around Jay's shoulders, and he turned to see Solange, a mischievous glint in her eyes. She leaned in conspiratorially, then erupted in a burst of laughter, sharp and unapologetic.

"Walk away, Jay," she whispered, her voice laced with mockery. "Save yourself the trouble. Y/N? He's her man always will be your basically renting space" She patted his shoulder, a gesture devoid of warmth, before sauntering off

The words, though delivered by a tipsy sister, landed like a punch. They articulated the fear that had been gnawing at Jay for years. He turned back to Y/N, who was now engaged in a lively conversation with Bey, their heads close, her hand resting on his arm. Y/N caught Jay's gaze again, and this time, he offered a slow, knowing smirk. He raised his champagne glass in a mock salute, mouthing, 'I don't like you.'

Jay felt a chill crawl up his spine.

as they toasted, Y/N found his way to their table. He clapped Jay on the back, a deceptively friendly gesture that felt more like a claim. "Congratulations, Jay," he drawled, his eyes, however, were on Beyonce, a flicker of something possessive and triumphant in their depth. "Going to be an interesting ride, this marriage of yours." He paused, taking a sip of champagne. "While you're at it," he added, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper only Jay could hear, "might as well have a divorce draft ready. Save you time later."
