Yearning

The canary diamond on Beyonce's left hand felt less like a symbol of eternal love and more like a heavy, strategic weapon. It had done its job: it had secured the alliance.

She held the ring up, letting the afternoon sun catch the facets. Six carats of undeniable proof that she had finished the race that Angela, Regina, and Amya had only thought they were running. They had given Y/n children; she had been given the promise of forever. In the eyes of society—and terrifyingly, in her own—she had won.

She slipped the ring back onto her finger, the cold weight settling comfortably. She needed the comfort today.

The house, usually a symphony of expensive silence, was currently vibrating with the controlled chaos of the three existing facts of Y/n's life: Leo (8, Regina's sharp wit), Maya (6, Angela's dramatic flair), and Finn (4, Amya's quiet, observant intensity).

"Beyonce! Maya says I'm using her crayons to draw a map to the lost city of Atlantis!" Leo yelled from the breakfast nook, his voice already carrying the resonant depth of his father.

Beyonce braced herself, smoothing the silk of her robe. "Leo, your father bought you an entire bucket of your own art supplies. Please leave the cartography of Atlantis out of Maya's school box."

She walked into the kitchen, pasting on the serene, unruffled expression of the ideal stepmother. They were good kids. Wonderful kids. Well-adjusted, polite, and already far too aware of the complicated matrimonial history that led to their current housing arrangement. She poured herself a second, unnecessary cup of coffee. Y/n was in his home office, sequestered behind a soundproof door, conducting negotiations that she knew involved millions.

He was the anchor of this life: solid, successful, and absolutely exhausted by the concept of human reproduction.

The knot in her stomach tightened. This was the source of her slow, creeping dread. She had the house, the reputation, the husband, and the children—but none of them were hers.

She studied Finn, crouched on the floor, meticulously lining up toy dinosaurs. He was a miniature Y/n, right down to the slight furrow in his brow when he focused. When she looked from Y/n to Finn, the DNA link was visible, seamless, indisputable. She saw a reflection she wasn't a part of. She was the beautiful, valuable frame around the original, priceless painting.

She felt acutely, perpetually, out of the loop.

Later that evening, after the last bedtime story had been read and the three children were safely tucked into the separate wings of the house that still felt slightly too large, Beyonce found Y/n in the master suite, toggling through news channels.

He looked up, relaxing instantly when he saw her. He was hers. Completely.

"God, those kids wear me out," he sighed, patting the duvet beside him. "The Atlantis map debacle nearly required an international treaty."

She smiled, but the warmth didn't reach her eyes. She settled beside him, tracing the lines of his palm.

"They're wonderful, honey. They're just... loud."

"It's a good kind of loud. Proof we're doing something right." He turned toward her, his gaze sweeping over her face. "You look tired."

"I'm not tired," she corrected softly. "I'm restless."

He took her hand, pulling it closer to examine the blinding ring. "That shouldn't make you restless. That should make you secure."

"It does," she insisted. "It makes me secure in us. But Y/n, we talked about this. It's been a year since the wedding. I'm thirty-two. We have the space, we have the resources—we have Leo, Maya, and Finn, who frankly, are ready to be wonderful big siblings."
