"Aubrey, what the fuck, man?" The stale scent of disinfectant and cheap air freshener hung heavy in the school bathroom. The clattering of ceramic as he carefully set down the used condom was somehow more disgusting than the act itself.

"What? I gotta be careful," Aubrey said, his face a mask of casual indifference as he pulled a small, suspiciously unmarked bottle from his backpack. My eyes widened in disbelief as he unstoppered it, the sharp, vinegary smell of pepper sauce cutting through the air, and poured it into the used latex. He was ridiculous.

"How about abstaining? We got music now, hurry the fuck up and tell that hoe to get the fuck on outta here." Cindy, still adjusting her bra in the cracked mirror, had been performing a mating call that sounded like a dying hyena for the past five minutes, and her presence was actively irking me.

"Cindy, you gotta go, babes," Aubrey mumbled, already zipping his bag. She looked at him in disbelief, her mouth hanging open, before huffing loudly and shoulder-checking him on her way out.

"If I were you, she wouldn't have gotten far with that at all," I scoffed, shaking my head. "And how the fuck can you continue when she sounds like a fucking dying hyena? I don't think I'd ever get hard off on that."

"No emotions attached," he shrugged, already heading for the door. We walked towards class, the bell's echo still vibrating in the hall.

"Late again, boys," Mrs. Bailey, fine ass, said as we slipped into the classroom. She barely looked up from her desk. "Rowland, you're with Knowles. Aubrey, you're with Fenty. Get to writing your projects – one song, you have a week. Be as creative as you can be."

I scanned the room. Onika was already cutting it up with homeboy Dwayne in the corner, probably planning their next viral TikTok dance. My eyes found Beyonce. She looked cute today, hair pulled back, a simple hoop glinting.

"You're mine," I said, settling into the desk beside her.

"What?" she looked at me, a soft frown forming between her eyebrows.

"Just write down how you feel. Raw emotions is what makes a song perfect and different from the rest."

Bey: With me bein' wherever I'm at Worried 'bout wherever you are We're takin' this a little too far

Alone in my place, my heart is away

Mine: Stop makin' a big deal out of the little things Got everything I'm asking for but you

One time, this is a song for the good girl, Don't sleep when you know you got it good, girl

This is a song for the good girl And I still keep it hood, still treat you like I should

"You can come over whenever so we can get this sorted in the basement studio," I told her as we packed up. "Hope you don't have a problem with Robyn as well, 'cause Aubrey is staying at my place, and he may want to use the studio for theirs."

"I'm coming over with Kelly. That wouldn't be a problem, right?" she asked, already pulling out her phone. She was always with my sister.

"Might. I got things to do," I said, already anticipating the fuss. I really did; Jatavia had been on my ass for not taking her to the mall. I really got a thing for crazy girls.

"You got things to do at eight o'clock?" she rolled her eyes, a hint of amusement playing on her lips.

"Why you tryna quiz me, shorty? Said I got things to do. Keep rolling your eyes, I'ma have to set your ass straight 'cause ole boy clearly isn't doing shit about it."
