The silence in the car was deafening. The hum of the engine and the faint strains of Beyoncé's music from the speakers were the only sounds breaking the thick tension
I'd expected her to be furious, to unleash a torrent of words after our bizarre exchange, but instead, there was this... this icy withdrawn stillness. It was almost worse than an argument.
I risked a glance at her. She was staring out the window, her profile sharp and unreadable against the flashing city lights
Her fingers tapped a restless rhythm on her knee, a tiny tell that betrayed the storm raging beneath the surface. I wanted to reach out, to shatter this fragile peace and get to the root of why she was icing me out, but I knew any attempt would be met with either silence or a cutting remark that would only push me further away
"So," I ventured, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the quiet. "Looking forward to tomorrow?"
She didn't turn her head. "Of course. It's the culmination of months of work." Her tone was flat, devoid of the usual passion she exuded when talking about her art
"Yeah. It's going to be incredible. I've seen the rehearsals, the energy..." I trailed off, searching for something, anything, that would spark a genuine reaction from her
Her eyes finally flicked towards me, and there was no warmth in them. "You've seen the rehearsals, yes. But not my rehearsals, have you?"
The implied accusation hung in the air. She was referring to the fact that I left her private rehearsal sessions earlier, the ones where she'd been trying to perfect a new, intricate dance break
she wanted to keep that specific part of the performance a secret, even from her core team. But this felt different. This felt like a personal exclusion, a punishment.
"Bey, come on. I had a phone call plus you were busy. I wouldn't want anyone in my face while doing so" I tried to keep my tone even, reasonable.
"And yet," she said, her voice laced with a subtle, dangerous sweetness, "you were perfectly happy to have her in your face, weren't you?"
There it was. The casual, thoughtful gift I'd given Bella, my girlfriend, the night before. It was a delicate silver chain with a single, shimmering pearl. It wasn't extravagant, just... pretty. And apparently, a major transgression in Beyoncé's book.
"It was a gift, Bey. She's my girlfriend. It's... normal."
"Normal," she repeated, the word dripping with disdain. "And what's normal about telling me, your best friend, your confidante, that you're thinking about her while I'm pouring my heart and soul into a performance for you to critique?"
I flinched. I remembered that conversation. I'd been trying to explain why I was a little distracted during the run-through, and in my clumsy attempt at honesty, I'd mentioned Bella. I hadn't meant anything by it, but seeing Beyoncé's reaction, I should have realized...
"I didn't mean it like that," I insisted, my voice rising slightly. "I was just... trying to be honest. We were talking about relationships, and I was trying to explain how I felt."
"And for the last time, y/n," she cut me off, her voice sharp, "I am not Bella. And whatever you feel for her, you don't get to bring it into my space and expect it to be 'normal.'"
A knot of frustration tightened in my chest. "So, what? I'm not allowed to have a girlfriend? I'm not allowed to think about my girl while with you? Is that the deal?"
This time, she finally turned to face me fully, her eyes blazing. "Don't you dare twist my words. I'm not saying you can't have a girlfriend. I'm saying how you conduct yourself, how you bring your personal life into our time – that's what's... problematic."
