I leaned back in my chair, the classroom chatter washing over me. Ms. Knowles, despite the frosty reception, was actually kind of... hot. And I wasn't usually one for older women, but there was something about her sharp gaze and the way she carried herself that had my attention. Maybe it was the way she handled my advances with a cool, dismissive air. Definitely liked that.

The bell rang, saving her from my own anticipated smart-ass retort. As students filed out, I lingered, feigning interest in my textbook. Ms. Knowles began gathering her things and I knew I had to make my move, this was an opportunity.

"Ms. Knowles," I said, finally, making my way towards her desk. "About the... questions."

She looked up, her eyebrows raised, a hint of amusement in her eyes. I felt a small grin forming on my face. "Yes, Mr. James?"

"I was just wondering," I said, leaning casually against the desk, "if you were always this... good at shutting down annoying teenagers?" She chuckled, a low, melodic sound. "It's a skill you develop over time."

"Well, you seem to have mastered it," I said, making eye contact. "So, are you free for a drink sometime? I'm sure you need to find a way to release some steam after a long day with us."

A playful smirk danced on her lips, and my heart did a little leap in my chest. "Mr. James, you are certainly... persistent." She paused, considering. "I'm not sure I'm ready to say yes to that. But I do appreciate the offer."

"Well, I insist," I said. "You know, for research purposes. I'm doing a study on the effectiveness of different ways to make someone smile."

She laughed again, shaking her head. "We'll see. Now, I have some papers to grade, so if you'll excuse me..."

"Alright, Ms. Knowles," I said, backing away. "I'll give you some space. But I'm not giving up. See you around." I turned and walked out of the classroom, a ridiculous smile plastered on my face.

The rest of the day was a blur of classes, but I couldn't get Ms. Knowles out of my head. After school, I called Trey.

"Bro, you would not believe what happened," I said, quickly explaining my encounter with the teacher. "She's actually kind of into it."

Trey choked on whatever he was smacking on over the phone "You? With a teacher? Bro, that's like, illegal."

"Shut up, man," I laughed. "And besides, I think she could handle herself."

The next few hours passed in a blur my mother blessed heart heart actually woke me up to check in on our new neighbor

"Mom, I don't want to be smiling in a old lady's face it's literally 8 pm she's probably asleep"

"Well, you'll know if you knock on the door and invite her over tomorrow for dinner" I wanted to smack my lips

where is her husband

"alright just hurry up you woke me outta my sleep" she went into the kitchen talking about lazy kids now and days

she must be on her cycle again where was Mike

she came back with a damn fruit basket

"Mom you could have delivered this yourself"

"Oh hush and go" she pushed me outside "and say goodnight grumpy no one cares you just woke up"

The fruit basket felt absurdly heavy in my hands as I stood on the porch of the new neighbor's house. It was a tasteful selection, I supposed - grapes, apples, a few pears, pineapples, all arranged in a wicker basket with a cellophane wrap and a cheerful red bow
