He'd draw his brows together, "what fragrance do you use..." The words died on his tongue. His body froze. It wasn't a question anymore. The casual inquiry dissolved into a devastating realization that washed over him like an Arctic wave. That scent. That subtle, musky, intimate scent. He'd woken to it, clinging to their sheets, to her skin, just hours ago. He'd dismissed it then, a figment of a half-asleep mind, a dream. But Elias was wearing it. Or rather, it was clinging to Elias.
Yn's hand, still on Elias's shoulder, clenched, then slowly, deliberately, dropped away. His gaze, ice-cold and unblinking, moved from Elias's face to mine. It wasn't anger yet, not the fire, but the chilling, desolate emptiness of utter betrayal. My breath hitched, a strangled sound in my throat. Elias, for all his composure, had a flicker of something in his eyes – a desperate, almost imperceptible glance towards me, then back to Yn, a silent acknowledgment of the trap sprung.
The air in the studio, moments before filled with the low hum of creativity, became thick, suffocating. The silence was absolute, save for the frantic beating of my own heart, a drum against my ribs. Yn didn't speak. He didn't need to. The knowledge was there, stark and undeniable, hanging between us like a poisoned cloud. He looked at Elias, then at me, then back at Elias, as if piecing together a vile puzzle. His jaw tightened, a muscle jumping in his cheek. The easy warmth that had defined him moments before had evaporated, leaving behind a stranger, a man whose world had just shattered.
My mind scrambled for an explanation, a deflection, anything. But my tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth. Every nerve in my body was screaming, my carefully constructed facade crumbling into dust right before my eyes. Elias, sensing the shift, cleared his throat, a small, almost imperceptible sound in the oppressive silence. He offered a tight, forced smile. "Just a new aftershave, Yn. Trying something different."
A pathetic excuse, transparent as glass. Yn didn't even acknowledge it. His eyes, dark and wounded, were still fixed on me. The "just us" he'd spoken of that morning, the desire for connection, now felt like a cruel, ironic twist of fate. He hadn't wanted to bond; he'd wanted to confirm a suspicion he hadn't even known he had until this very moment.
"Right," Yn said, his voice flat, devoid of its usual warmth, utterly unlike him. He turned fully away from Elias, his back to the console, but his gaze remained locked on me. "B," he stated, not asked. "Why don't we go back to the office? I think we need to talk." his voice still low, controlled, but now laced with a steely resolve that made her stomach churn. "Now."
She wanted to say something, anything. To deny, to explain, to beg for mercy. But her vocal cords seemed to have fused. Her eyes darted to Elias, who stood frozen, face pale, his earlier bravado completely gone, replaced by a look of sheer helplessness. He offered a small, almost imperceptible shake of his head – a warning not to speak, perhaps, or a sign of his own defeat.
"Yes, Yn," she managed to croak, the word a dry, rasping sound. She couldn't meet his eyes anymore. The shame was a burning inferno, consuming her whole.
Yn didn't wait. He simply turned, his movements stiff, deliberate, and walked towards the studio door. The hum of the equipment seemed to grow louder, mocking the silence he left in his wake. As he passed Elias, he didn't spare him another glance, as if Elias had ceased to exist.
B followed, her legs feeling like lead. Each step was an effort, a march towards an inevitable reckoning. She could feel Elias's eyes on her back as she left, a silent witness to the demolition of her life. She didn't look back. She couldn't.
The walk from the studio to their shared office felt like an eternity. The short corridor, usually bustling with colleagues, was deserted, amplifying the suffocating quiet between them. Yn walked ahead, his shoulders rigid, radiating an icy fury that was far more terrifying than any shouted anger. He didn't speak, didn't look at her, yet his presence was overwhelming, a dark storm cloud blotting out the sun.
