My What? 3

My chair scraped back with a violent screech, a sound as jarring as the revelation that had just been dropped on the polished mahogany table. I didn't bother with a graceful exit; I shoved myself away, the lingering scent of lamb suddenly repulsive. My father's continued beaming, the faint clinking of his glass against Beyoncé's parents, only fueled the inferno growing in my gut. I scoffed, a raw, bitter sound that held all the contempt I felt in that moment, and strode towards the arched doorway leading out of the dining hall, towards the relative sanctuary of my wing of the mansion. I didn't look back, but the suffocating silence behind me, the sudden absence of their celebratory murmurs, told me my departure was noted.

My footsteps echoed on the marble floors, each one a hammer blow against my spiraling thoughts. A merger. A done deal. She knew all along. The words replayed like a broken record, intertwined with the phantom sensation of her fingers trailing across my arm, the memory of her laughter, bright and seemingly genuine, echoing in the pool. It was a lie. All of it. A calculated performance to lull me into... what? Compliance? Affection? The sheer audacity of it made me want to rage.

I was halfway down the grand hall, the ornate tapestries and ancestral portraits blurring into an indignant haze, when her voice, calm and steady, cut through the clamor in my mind.

"Y/N."

I stopped, my shoulders tensing. I hadn't expected her to follow so quickly. My first instinct was to keep walking, to ignore her, to let the vastness of the mansion absorb my anger and her presence. But something, perhaps a desperate need for answers, or simply the ingrained politeness of my upbringing, made me hesitate.

I turned slowly, my jaw tight, my gaze already blazing. She stood a few yards behind me, bathed in the soft glow of a nearby chandelier. Her gown, so elegant and flowing just moments ago, now seemed like an armor, designed to conceal the machinations beneath. Her expression was, as always, unreadable, composed. The faint, knowing smile was still there, but now it felt like a brand.

"What do you want?" I demanded, my voice tight, devoid of any of the warmth or humor it had held when speaking to her just hours before. "Come to finish the charade?"

She didn't flinch. Her eyes, those captivating honey eyes, held mine steadily. "I wanted to talk to you. Properly."

"Properly?" I scoffed again, the sound laced with disbelief. "You call this proper? Setting me up, manipulating me, letting me believe... what, exactly? That you were actually interested in me? Not just my father's assets?" The question hung in the air, heavy and accusatory.

"It's not as simple as that," she replied, her voice still a low, even murmur, like calm waves against a storm-tossed shore.

"Oh, it's pretty damn simple to me," I retorted, taking a step towards her, fuelled by the surge of betrayal. "You came here knowing your family and mine had already decided our lives for us. You played the part. You let me... you encouraged me to think there was something real between us. The pool, the conversation, the laughter... was it all just a test drive? To see if the 'chemistry' was convincing enough for the merger?" My voice was rising now, betraying the raw wound she had inflicted.

A subtle shift. The faint smile finally faded, replaced by a more serious, almost weary expression. "No. The pool... that wasn't part of the script. Not in the way you're implying. My family, our world, operates differently than yours might. Agreements like these are often made with the future in mind, long before the individuals meet. It's about legacy, about security, about the consolidation of power."

"And what about feelings?" I spat, the word tasting bitter. "What about my feelings? Do those just get swept away in the pursuit of 'legacy'?"

Her gaze softened, just infinitesimally. "I understand your anger. I truly do. And no, feelings aren't irrelevant. They are... a variable. One that can complicate things, or, perhaps, make them bearable." She paused, and for the first time, I felt a flicker of genuine remorse from her, a break in the carefully constructed facade. "What happened between us today, in the pool... that was not an act. It was unexpected. And it was... real. As real as anything can be under these circumstances."

"Real?" I repeated, my voice dropping, laced with pain. "You think I can believe that now? After everything? After knowing you held this over my head the entire time?"

She took a step closer, her eyes searching mine, and for a moment, I saw a reflection of the same confusion and complexity that swirled within me. "Real, Y/N," she insisted, her voice dropping to an almost intimate whisper. "It made me realize that perhaps... this merger, this arrangement... might not be as cold and sterile as our fathers intended. It might, with time, become something else. Something... more."

The words hung in the air, offering a strange, unsettling paradox. A corporate alliance forged in the fires of deceit, yet with the faint, unsettling promise of something genuine buried within. I looked at her, at the woman who had just shattered my understanding of the day, of her, of myself. My anger warred with a desperate, foolish need to believe that fleeting glimpse of vulnerability, that hint of something human beneath the strategic ice.

"More?" I echoed, the single word loaded with a fresh wave of despair and confusion. "What 'more' could there possibly be, when it all started with a lie?"

Her composure, a fortress I'd thought impenetrable, finally cracked, if only by a whisper. "It started with necessity, Y/N. Not a lie of malice." Her voice, still low, now carried a faint tremor, something akin to a plea. "Do you truly think I enjoyed this secrecy? The weight of it? My family is... formidable. To defy them, to even hint at not going through with it before the terms were set... it was unthinkable."

She took another step, closing the distance between us until she stood just an arm's length away. The soft light of the chandelier shimmered in her hair, highlighting the subtle tension in her jaw. "I had to decide, once I met you, if this was merely an obligation or if there could be something worth salvaging, worth building on. And after today... in the pool... I saw the latter."

I wanted to scoff again, to lash out, but the raw honesty in her eyes, combined with the ghost of her touch on my skin, held me captive. "So, you just... went along with it? No hesitation? No thought for... anything else?"

Her gaze didn't waver. "Hesitation would have been perceived as weakness. But if you think I approached this without my own apprehension, without my own hopes for something more than a sterile agreement, then you haven't seen me clearly at all." She lifted a hand, then hesitated, her fingers hovering inches from my arm, as if seeking permission for contact she might no longer be granted. The gesture, so tentative from someone usually so assured, was jarring. "This isn't just about assets, Y/N. It's about combining two incredibly powerful, incredibly demanding families. Our fathers expect unity. They expect us to make this work. And after today, I truly believe we can."

The anger hadn't vanished, but it had morphed into a twisting knot of confusion and a strange, unwelcome empathy. Part of me still screamed at the betrayal, at the sheer audacity of her playing this game. But another, softer part, remembered the genuine laughter, the shared secrets under the water, and saw something in her eyes that mirrored my own sense of being trapped. She was a queen on her own board, yes, but perhaps she too was just another piece in a much larger, more ruthless game.

"So, I'm just supposed to forget how I felt?" I finally said, the pain back in my voice, raw and exposed. "Forget being made a fool of? And just... accept this pre-packaged future?" The words were meant to be a rejection, a final barricade, but they sounded more like a desperate question.

Beyoncé's hand finally, gently, settled on my forearm. Her touch, which moments ago would have ignited rage, now sent a strange, complicated current through me - a mix of lingering hurt and undeniable connection. Her thumb lightly stroked my skin, a gesture of comfort, or perhaps a silent plea.

"I'm not asking you to forget, Y/N," she said, her voice dropping to that intimate whisper again, pulling me into her orbit despite my resistance. "I'm asking you to consider that even a forced beginning can lead to something... chosen. Eventually."

Her eyes, honeyed and deep, held mine, promising a future I couldn't yet comprehend, built on a foundation of deceit, yet somehow imbued with the unexpected warmth of a connection I couldn't deny. My chest tightened, the storm in my gut still raging, but a new, unsettling quiet had begun to settle over its chaotic center. What if she was right? What if, against all odds, a lie could birth a truth? The thought was terrifying, and strangely, undeniably, compelling
