After the group's return to the Second Mass and almost endangering everyone, half of them returned to retrieve Click's body for a proper funeral. Whereas Anne stayed to treat those who had gotten hurt scrambling in the chaos. And she herself, had gotten herself on recon duty before anyone could have any say in it.
By the time she'd gotten back with Nathan, watched Pope be dragged off by Andrew, returned the extra ammo and finally let it dawn upon her that her head had taken a stronger blow than she thought she'd taken. Perhaps she should've taken painkillers, or the brief check-up Anne had offered.
Instead, she let the stubborn Mason trait and adrenaline covering up most of it take charge in her decision to go on recon before the crack of dawn.
She regretted Anne's plea to take those painkillers now as she stood staring in the cracked mirror of the classroom turned dormitory.
Elizabeth glanced at the discolouration that had formed on the side and back of her bicep, trailing up just past the edge of her only recently recovered shoulder, that had thankfully only stung dully as she rolled it after the collusion that night. "Son of a bitch."
And if her head hadn't still throbbed from impact hours later, mixed with exhaustion. The only other evidence of what happened and only for others to see, was the light bruising on her cheekbone.
Her fingers gripped around the hem of her shirt as she pulled it back over her head, when the door was pulled ajar and Jay appeared before stopping dead in his tracks.
"I did not-" "It's nothing-" Their voices blended as Jay averted his eyes in panic, he hadn't meant to walk in on her, even if the Commons had shared this space between the four of them an a woman their age named Grace. And she suspected his immediate worry after seeing the bruise peaking from beneath her sleeve instead.
The twenty year old scratched his neck awkwardly, a slight tinge of red flushing across his face before pointing to the cupboard behind his friend. "I just wanted to, uhm-"
She took a brief look at the cabinet in the tight space next to her, before moving to the side to where her things lay on a make shift bed, "Yeah. Of course."
The only sound left in the room was the twenty-one year old going through his bag, and the creaking sound the frame made as she sat down on the flimsy mattress.
