(Chapter 4) Part 27: It All Goes Wrong

Hello everyone,

I just want to warn you that the last third of the chapter gets really heavy and dark. To the point where I, myself, started crying halfway through writing it, sorry in advance.

________________________________________________________________________________Dan hands the phone back to his brother and takes the VHS, "Well then," he starts, "That was depressing."

Nearic furrows his brow as he looks down at his phone, "No kidding, can't believe Playtime would go that far to cover things up."

Dan shrugs, "I kinda expected it at this point to be honest. Still..."

"To trick a kid into murdering his own parents," the teen shakes his head, "I can't imagine."

The older brother looks down in thought, "From the documents I've read and tapes I've watched, it seemed as though they put more than one kid into Doey..." the tape of Kevin Barnes plays back in his mind, "Did Kevin lose control, or did his wild influence make Jack act so violently?"

He sighs and shakes his head, "A thought for another time," he mutters.

"What was that?" Nearic asks.

Dan waves him off, "Nothing, just talking to myself," he turns back to the doorway behind him, "Let's get to work while the peace is good."

The younger brother chuckles as he puts his phone away, "Good idea."

The brothers turned and left the elevated office, Nearic was careful not to hurt himself, before they both looked around the room. Dogday and Catnap were sitting by the other office, making conversation to pass the time, before they spotted the two approaching.

"Hey there," Dogday cheered with a wave.

Catnap stood up as he smiled, "Ready to get this..." he trails off at their saddened expressions, "What happened?"

Dan holds up the tape, prompting Dogday to take off the pack, "The tape was a recording of Experiment 1322's reunion with their parents."

Both Critters froze as Nearic sighed and shook his head, "I think Doey was made from one of the kids that took the tours and then tricked into murdering his own family."

Dogday held his face with his hands while Catnap looked away with a growl, "Damn them!"

Dan walked over to the canine and helped put the tape away, "Got the bombs planted?"

"Yeah," Dogday replied, "All that's left is to turn on the gas and get out of here."

Dan winces, "About that, there may be a slight issue."

"Oh, what now?" Nearic whines.

Dan looks back at his brother, "For the gas to have the explosive capacity we need, we have to mix it up with some chemicals first."

Catnap rolls his eyes, "Well that's just great, how long will that take?"

Dan shrugs as he looks at the pipes, "Well, the chemicals are in each labelled capsule in the network. If I want the Red Smoke to be ready, I need the gas to pump through each one, and that's going to take awhile."

"Alright," Nearic nods, "What can we do?"

Dan looks back and points to the large office behind them, "The controls for the Red Smoke are up there; I need you to turn it on so I can work, then when I say so, engage the overflow procedures. It'll then vent the Red Smoke throughout the entire foundation of the factory in order to stabilize, and that's exactly what we want. After that, we'll get the hell out of here and back to Safe Haven."
