The moment Taehyung saw that familiar face, everything around him dissolved, vanished into the air like dust. The corridor, the crowd, the noise... everything faded, like someone sucked the oxygen from the room. All he could see was the blurry vision of Im Yunho, his ex-husband, accompanied by the ringing in his ears.
Yunho stood there, with a smirk on his face that looked like a smile, but he wasn't fooling Taehyung. He looked at Taehyung like he did all those years, including the nightmares.
Taehyung's body went rigid, a familiar tremor starting in his fingertips, slowly spreading inside him like a wildfire. He couldn't move; it's like his legs were nailed to the floor, until the man took a step forward.
Taehyung's legs moved on instinct, backward, towards Jungkook for safety, but he was too lost in his head to remind himself that Jungkook was there, his friends were there, watching everything unfold. His gaze was fixed on the man, who had once held him too tightly and broken him. He was about to take another step back, involuntarily reaching out for Jungkook, but his breath hitched when Yunho took a swift step and firmly held his wrist. He flinched, panic clawing up his throat at the touch.
Yunho dragged him forward, ignoring the buckle in Taehyung's knees, and pulled him closer before he turned Taehyung around, wrapping his arms around his shoulder. "You look... healthy." He said, looking at Taehyung from head to toe.
Taehyung's face turned pale, and his skin crawled at the contact. He knew exactly what Yunho was referring to... his weight. Yunho didn't appreciate it in the past, and clearly, his opinions hadn't changed. Tears welled in his eyes, and his body went still, but the vigorous tremor within continued. This cannot be happening... this cannot be the truth... no matter what he chanted in his mind, to convince himself it was one of his nightmares, the touch on his shoulder reminded him of the reality, and the tears finally spilled out of his control, still staring into the face of his past.
Yunho clicked his tongue while shaking his head before wiping the tears off Taehyung's cheeks with a pad of his thumb. "I know, baby... I know. Don't cry. I'm here now. I've missed you, too."
/Don't cry./
/Don't cry./
/Don't cry./
Yunho hated tears.
Just like that, like a switch, there were no more tears in his eyes. Nothing. Despite the pain in his heart, there were no tears. All he could hear were the words /Don't cry/ and the consequences that always followed if he disobeyed.
Yunho leaned in and pressed a kiss to his temple before whispering, "Very good." He looked at Jungkook and back at the crowd behind him. "Like I said... I've been away for work all this time, waiting for MY husband to finish college. Seems like he made a lot of friends..." He gave Jungkook a once-over with a clenched jaw, pulling Taehyung closer. "Thank you for being there for him. I know how hard it was for us to stay away from each other."
