Somin knocked on her son's door before slowly pushing it open. Taehyung was curled on the edge of his bed, shoulders shaking, as he sobbed into his pillow. The sight broke her heart.
"Tae..." She whispered, stepping in. He looked up, his eyes red and swollen. The moment he saw her, he collapsed into her arms and clung to her.
"I lost him, Eomma! I lost Jungkook!"
Somins's breath caught. She was right. It was indeed Jungkook, but what was happening? From what she heard, Jungkook was in love, the first one to confess.
"I swear I was going to tell him..." Taehyung continued, voice cracking. "I was going to explain everything. But now he thinks I betrayed him. He thinks I lied. He won't even hear me now."
Somin held his tighter to her chest, stroking his hair, lost in thought. Taehyung kept talking in broken words, going in circles, and her own tears slipped silently down her cheeks. She didn't speak a word. She just cradled him, gently caressing him as she used to when he was little.
His breath slowly began to soften as exhaustion overtook the heartbreak. Somin helped him gently rest his head against her lap, and his eyes immediately fluttered shut. She looked down at her son, her heart aching with the weight of his pain.
.
Jungkook stirred and groggily opened his eyes, still in the haze of painkillers he had taken. His head felt foggy, and his limbs felt heavy, but something felt off. He looked at the clock on his nightstand, and his breath caught. It was past midnight.
"ShIt!! He muttered, bolting upright. "Fvck! Fvck! Fvck!" He grabbed his phone, his heart pounding in his chest as the screen lit up with a flood of unread messages from Taehyung.
/I'm here at the café./
/Just reminding you of your meeting./
/Still waiting, Kookie./
/Please come./
...and more.
Jungkook's stomach dropped, and he cursed again, louder this time. His fingers trembled as he dialed Taehyung's number, but it went to voicemail. On the fifth attempt, the line cut... it was now switched off.
He drove to Taehyung's house, hoping to explain, and stood outside, calling again, but got the same result. He drove in panic and desperation, but now that he was there, he didn't want to disturb the household at that hour. So, he left a voicemail, filled with regret.
/"Taehyung... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to miss it. I took the painkillers and I—I passed out. I swear I didn't ignore you. I wanted to come. I was going to come. Please don't think I didn't care. I care so much. I'm ready to hear everything, talk so much. I'll be at the café first thing in the morning. Please... please come."/
He ended the message, stared at the house one last time, and drove away, hoping to sort everything out the next day at any cost.
The next day, Jungkook got ready as early as he could, bracing himself for whatever was to come and determined to do the right thing even if it cost him his heart. Just when he was about to leave, the maid approached him. "Young master, someone is here to meet you."
Jungkook frowned as he stepped into the living room and froze when he saw Taehyung's mother seated there. The surprise faded, and he quickly composed himself. "Good morning, Mrs Kim." He bowed politely as she returned the greeting with a smile.
