XXVII
Leo and Scott entered the hospital together after being called out of class. It was strange. The two of them being summoned at the same time usually meant something supernatural, which neither of them had the patience for today.
"You've been quiet," Scott said, glancing at him as they walked through the corridor.
"As opposed to my naturally overhyped self?" Leo asked, brows raised.
Scott gave him a look. "You know what I mean. We can talk about it... your mom, the weird vibes, whatever."
"We could," Leo replied, "or, wild idea, we could suppress all emotion and let it build up until it explodes at a hang out."
Scott blinked. "Have you and Stiles been watching reruns of Grey's Anatomy again?"
"Only the trauma heavy ones. Gotta stay on brand."
"I think you've been around him way too much" Scott teased.
"What can I say—the boy's fantastic in bed" Leo stated like it was nothing.
"And there goes the pictures in my head I did not want to imagine" Scott grimaced.
"You've already walked in on us and could just ask, no need to picture it McCall"
Scott shook his head, chuckling as they turned the corner. "Seriously though. I'm here if you need to vent. I may not have the best advice, but I've got great hearing and a very supportive aura."
"You lost me at 'supportive aura,' Gandhi."
Before Scott could respond, Leo spotted Melissa at the nurses' station. Without hesitation, he called out to her, arms already spread wide.
"Mama McCall!" he beamed, pulling her into a quick hug.
Over the summer, Leo and Scott had become closer than either expected. After Allison, Scott withdrew into himself, and Leo, with Stiles in tow, basically moved into his house to keep him company. Even when it was just Leo, it never felt strange. Melissa had grown used to having him around. She adored him in her own quiet way, especially after learning that the boy dating her son's best friend had more heart than swagger.
"I'm sorry to pull you out of school," she said, already walking them down the hall. "But this has gotten out of hand."
She didn't wait for questions.
"Isaac was found last night. Serious injuries, car accident. He's healing, fast. Too fast. I've got cops poking around, and Derek's MIA."
"So why am I here?" Leo asked, slipping his hands into his coat pockets.
Melissa hesitated. "He wasn't alone. He was brought in with a woman. Human, as far as I can tell. But she asked for 'the boy with chaos in his blood.'"
Leo stopped cold. His voice dropped a notch. "Okay... that's not ominous at all."
"Right?" Melissa looked just as unsettled. "But... I mean... you're the only person I know who can blast open a steel door with red powers, so I'm going with you."
"I feel mildly violated all of sudden," Leo muttered as they kept walking.
Scott leaned in closer to Melissa. "Why didn't you tell me this earlier?"
"Honestly, I was hoping I didn't have to"
"What do you mean?" Scott asked.
"Everything that you've been doing... the extra reading, the summer school, saving up for the bike, even though it scares me half to death... honey, I just didn't wanna disrupt a good rhythm."
