The house was empty, in both a physical and metaphorical sense.

It was a modern building. Sleek and calm. Upon walking in the house, one would see a living room with minimalist decorating. There was a long black couch and glass coffee table that faced a fire place with a flat screen television mounted about it. Next to it, was a giant glass wall with a porch just outside. Going out there, a person could over look a forest of evergreen trees that stretched out half a mile. Past the trees was a city of tall buildings with flashy lights that could also be seen from the leverage point.

Levi had picked it because it was far from people.

It was in the middle of this nowhere street where three other houses were located. Each barely close enough to be seen by their right and left neighbor.

It was early in the morning. Maybe only 3 am, but Levi hadn't bothered to look at a clock. The time wouldn't matter until 7 am, when he would have to prepare himself for another day of whatever his manager had planned out. He would have known what that would be if he hadn't zoned out thinking about you while his manager was explaining everything.

He found himself thinking of you unconsciously. Levi wondered if you had moved on and were in a new relationship. It had been a couple of years.

God, he missed you. And that's why the house felt so empty.

"It's only a house until there is love." He recalled you saying while he had been looking for a new residency.

There was a void you had left in his heart the day you said you couldn't handle the distance anymore. Levi had moved to California a few years ago in pursue of his directing career; which he had never thought would take off. At first, you had been excited for him. You could constantly fly out and spend as much time there before you would finally be called back home for a work meeting.

Towards the end of the relationship, you two had seen each other less and less. Levi had written, produced, and directed his first major motion picture. He was constantly visiting talk shows and going to interviews to promote and talk about his movie. You barely saw him. And when he was home, he was too exhausted to do anything with you. Your schedules started to have less and less overlap to see each other. Eventually, it became too much to keep the relationship running.

Levi stood out on the porch, looking out at the trees and smoking a cigarette. It was a nasty habit he had picked up after you left. He remembered how much of a distain you had for cigarettes. How you would cringe whenever you got near one. But after you left, he needed something to cope. Drinking had seemed like a sloppy and slippery slope. And any other drug addiction was illegal and could kill him on one bad day.

You had been his nicotine before. He had to fill that high.

The charcoal haired man went into a trance, watching the smoke escape his lips and dance into the air.

God, he wished he was in bed holding you instead of slowly poisoning his body.

Levi hadn't realized he pulled out his phone and his finger was lingering over the call button, your number already typed in. Seeing this, he carelessly tossed his phone behind him. He didn't care if it broke. He had more money than he knew what to do with. That was his compensation for losing you. He still would have traded it all just to have you back.

But then the phone buzzed, getting his attention.

He picked it up, staring into the glowing screen.

(Y/n), 3:21 am- I know you're awake, you dumb ass insomniac. Just call me please.

He stared at the message for a minute, pondering about why you would text him. Especially now. Two years was more than enough time to have moved on and started over.

He still called you. He couldn't resist.

"Hello?" He asked.

"Hey." Whispered a shaky breath. Your voice hit him like a ton of bricks. He ached to hear it again for so long. It was like having a breath of air after staying underwater almost long enough to drown.

"Why...why did you text me?"

You took a deep, shaky breath.

"I'm in your drive way." You let out a small, painful laugh, "I can't get myself to go to the door..."

Levi walked into his house, not even bothering to close the sliding glass door all the way. His ear stayed pressed against the phone as he made his way to the front door. Wrapping his hand around the cold brass knob, he twisted it and looked outside. He looked down onto his driveway to see a familiar white car, engine running, sitting behind his own.

He didn't hang up, but he let his arm drop to his side. It took at lot for him not to run down the concrete steps to your car.

You unlocked the doors and watched as he walked to the front passenger's seat and hopped in. You could immediately smell him. His familiar scent of lemons greeted you instead of a hello. You could also smell that he had been smoking, which saddened you.

Neither of you looked at the other for a while. You both looked straight ahead, watching the morning fog roll across the ground.

"Why are you here?" Levi finally muttered, unable to sit in the awkward silence any longer with so many questions running through his mind. He looked over at you with his eyes shining like quarters.

"I-I don't know..." Your voice came out to be just above a whisper. "I just needed to see you." Your mouth felt so dry.

"I'm sorry." He said. You finally looked back at him with your (e/c) orbs.

"For what?"

"For moving out here. My life was fine the way it was."

You gave him a small smile and shook your head.

"You're living your dream. You're doing what you love instead of being stuck in some dumb office job. I'm proud of you." Your body acted against your mind. Despite trying to resist it, your handed reach out and took his. His hand was the same as you remembered, slightly dry from hours of being submerged in water while washing dishes. They didn't have to be like that. He owned a dishwasher and could have easily afforded a maid. However, Levi never thought any machine or human could clean to his standards.

"I don't want this." He murmured, "I want-I need you."

And as if nothing was wrong between you two, you both leaned in, pressing your foreheads together. Your eyes were gently closed and you felt calm and safe again. It was like this heavy weight in your heart had been taken off.

For Levi, it was the opposite. He hated that this was it. He wanted you to once again be his. This little display of affection wasn't enough.

The worst part about finally getting that breath of air is when you can't get enough into your lungs before you go back under.

Levi didn't want to go back under. He needed you back.

"Do you...love me again?" You asked gingerly.

"I never stopped."

"I love you too."

Finally a longer one. Took long enough.
