Chapter 8

Oriana

The final bell rang at the end of the day signalling the time to go home. I hauled my bag high onto my shoulder and pushed my way through the door and into the stream of students making their way out of the school.

“Hey Oriana” Blake called from behind me. I groaned quietly to myself. I really couldn’t be asked to talk to him right now. I turned around in the now deserted hallway and shifted my weight from one foot to the other awkwardly. “Umm...hey” I said quietly, itching to get home. He smiled at me. “So you up for dinner tonight?” he asked happily. I shook my head vigorously. “I can’t tonight. I have homework to do” I lied quickly. He sighed and rubbed his head softly. “Come on. It’s Friday night” He moaned. I continued to shake my head. “I’m sorry I really can’t” I lied again.

Something changed then in Blake’s face. It only changed for a split second. But I noticed it. His face darkened. Literally his face clouded over and was almost black. His eyes changed from their original bright blue to thin red slits. My breath caught in the back of my throat as his face changed back to normal.

He sighed and stepped back. “Fine. I’ll see you soon” He whispered. His face came towards me and I flinched away from him, remembering the face that was there before. He sighed again and drew back slowly. I fidgeted with my bag my eyes not meeting his. They were trained down onto the floor, examining the tiles around my feet. He turned on his heel and sauntered away.

I looked up when his footsteps began to drift away. He was nearly at the end of the corridor. I stared at him. His back began to move. I thought he was laughing but it was more than that. His whole frame had begun to shake. I squinted to get a better look at him. He stopped in his tracks and his arms fell out to his sides. A pair of huge leather like wings ripped out through his skin and shirt. My mouth fell open and my heart beat louder. They flapped together softly. They were jet black and thin, skeletal almost. Six thin bone like structures gave the thin leathery skin shape. At the end of all the thin bone structures, the wings ended in thick sharp points. His skin turned back to the black colour it was a few moments ago.

He turned to me and smiled. Not concerned that I was staring at him. His eyes were once again thin red slits. His mouth tipped up in a toothy smile. His teeth were sharp and pointed. His tongue slipped out between the gap in the two sets of teeth. It was dark and snake like.

Who was this person? He was not the Blake I had known. My knees were wobbling and my heart felt like it was about to rip through my chest. He took a step towards me. I was frozen to the spot with fear. He began to gain speed and walk faster towards me. Thirty steps away....20.....15....10. I couldn’t move. My face broke out in a sweat and my skin became clammy.

‘Run you bitch...RUN’ My conscience screamed at me. I still didn’t move. Five steps away. ‘RUN NOW’ I continued to scream at myself.  This time my brain kicked in and I listened. I spun round quickly and ran towards the exit leading to the car park. I could hear his wings flapping together as he ran. He was getting closer and closer to me. My feet pounded the floor, my determination to leave the building pushed me on.

The doors were in sight now. I pushed myself on and sped up to my top speed. My heart beating and adrenaline pumping through my veins. He was lagging behind and I was closer and closer to the door. A leather like, skeletal hand brushed softly over my arm. I pulled it away and turned my head slightly to the left, my feet still pounding against the floor. His long arm was stretched out towards me and claw like hands grabbed at the air.
