Chapter Twenty Four

Mrs Kurtis (Andria)

I stormed out of the house, infuriated by Lydia’s accusations that Oriana would be safer in that place. I was wrong to send her there and I need to get my little girl back. I climbed into my car and slipped of the driveway heading towards the mental hospital I had sent her too.

Before long I was driving up to a large gate positioned in a space along a tall red brick wall with tall pointed fencing adorning the top of it. I pulled my car up to speak with one of the guards at the gate. “I’m here to make an appointment” I said as soon as he had bent down to eye level with me. He nodded once and rung through to reception. The gates slowly swung open and I drove through them, following a gravely track up to the front of the building. I took in the old building that loomed high above me. The blood red bricks made the gloomy building stand out from the bleak surroundings. I took in the sloping lawn of the garden and the patches of bright coloured flowers and trees dotted randomly around the open lawn.

As I reached the front of the building I caught sight of a large black metal sign. A bright gold edge was surrounding the sheet of black metal and big gold letters spelled out the name Great Willows Home for the Mentally Unstable. Running since 1918 after the 1st world war, was written underneath. I parked the car and stepped gingerly out of it. My feet crunching on the gravel under foot. A shiver ran up my spine as I walked cautiously towards the main doors, an unnatural silence following me.

I stood in front of the doors and pressed the large black button on the wall next to the door. The silence returned before it was split by a static buzz and click from the door indicating it had been unlocked. I was peeled open from the inside and I stepped slowly into a large reception area. I walked quickly over to the main reception desk, my heels clicking on the hard floor, the sound bouncing of the walls around me.

I shakily placed my hand bag in front of me and smiled at the lady on the other side of the desk. “How can I help you?” she asked giving me a weak smile. I swallowed and began.

“I haven’t got an appointment but…” I was cut off.

“No appointment no access beyond this point” she said over me. I frowned and she tapped her pen on a small plastic sign to my left that read what she had told me. I smiled again trying to stay calm. “Yes I understand but if you could please let me…” I was again cut off, my patience with this woman wearing thin. “Look miss, I said no appointment no access” she said curtly, all penitence gone from her voice. “Well I have to speak with my daughters Doctor right away” I said shrilly making the women look at me in shock. She swallowed and opened her mouth before a door to my right swung open and an older gentleman stepped through.

The man was tall and thin with toned skin and a soft looking face that held bright blue eyes that wrinkled slightly at the corners. Caterpillar thick eyebrows framed the tops of his eyes and a thick moustache took up a haphazard position on his top lip. Light wisps of grey and white hair covered most of the older man’s head. He paused as the receptionist and I looked over at him. “Everything okay June” he asked the lady and she smiled slightly.

“I was just telling this lady that with no appointment made she cannot expect to see anyone” she informed the older gentleman. My heart sank as he turned to me with an apologetic look on his face. “I am sorry madam but June here is correct. You can make an appointment now or you can ring us to make one in future” he told me smiling sadly. I nodded once and took the card with the number on from his outstretched hand.
