Chapter 9
Mrs Kurtis (Andria)
Oriana fell silent. For the first time in her life my little baby had nothing to say. Her Face was slowly changing from a perky pink to a snow white colour. “Oriana? Darling, are you okay?” I asked reaching across the table to comfort her. An inch away from her and she flinched away, removing her arms from the table. “You are sick” She whispered, staring straight at me with a straight face. My brow creased as I pulled my arm back towards me. “Pardon?” I asked her softly. She laughed slightly, her eyes boring into mine. “This is your idea of a sick joke isn’t it?” She asked me forcefully. I shook my head roughly. “I would never do that to you” I insisted. But she was having none of it.
“Look. I even went to see the school toady and they showed me this file and then I went and spoke to Dimitri’s dad. It’s all true” I spoke quickly getting a little worked up. She tutted slightly. “So if Dimitri really is dead then how can I see him? Tell me that” She asked raising her eyebrows and crossing her arms over her chest. I sighed and stared at her. “I can’t explain it” She smiled at her ‘win’. “But I am not lying” I told her in a desperate attempt to get her to understand. “I’m going to bed” She huffed as she pushed the chair away from the table and stalked out of the kitchen.
‘I’m her mother. Why won’t she believe me?’ I asked myself placing my head in my hands. Someone entered quietly from behind me. I kept my head down and did not turn to greet the person. “Auntie? Did you tell her?” Lydia asked from the door way. I nodded my head softly and I heard her come closer. “And? What did she say?” She asked quickly her voice thick with worry. “She thinks I am lying to her” I whispered lifting my tear strewn face to meet Lydia’s expressionless one. “Oh” was all she said yet it made me burst into a flood of tears. “Why won’t she believe me? I’m her mum for goodness sake” I cried desperately trying to understand.
Lydia wrapped an arm around my shoulders and held me tight. “She’ll come around” She whispered resting her head onto my shoulder. “We’ll just have to make her realise the truth” she whispered. My mind sparked. “Lydia can you get me the phone book. I have an idea. I’m going to make her understand if it’s the last thing I ever do” I mumbled whipping my tear stained face.
Lydia rushed out of the kitchen and returned a few minutes later, phone in one hand and phone book in the other. “What are you going to do?” She asked setting them down on the table in front of me. I brushed her question away while I flicked to the letter ‘A’. My finger slid down the page and stopped at ‘Andrews, Blake’. My fingers skipped from one number to the other as I punched the correct number into the phone in my hand. It rung 3 times before someone picked up on the other end.
“Blake Andrew’s” A preoccupied voice said to me. I cleared my throat and began.
“Hello, Blake its Andria Kurtis. Oriana’s mum” I told him. His attention snapped up quickly after I said her name. “Oh hello. Can I help you?” he asked in a voice that could only be described as interested. “Well I was wondering if I could ask a favour of you” I told him.

“She just went to the bathroom” Lydia informed me as she came running down the stairs the next morning. I smiled and turned to face the audience in front of me.
