Chapter Fourteen
Dimitri

“Hey” someone called from behind me. I whipped round to stare at them. The person was a girl, but not just any girl. It was Lydia, Oriana’s cousin. Her mouth was flapping open and the entire colour of her once rosy face drained away, a look of fear streaked across it. I contemplated staying and talking to her, but I knew I couldn’t get another girl wrapped up in my stupid pathetic life. It just wasn’t fair. Tentatively I took a step back and turned, taking long, stretched out strides as I fled away from her piercing gaze. “Hey, wait” she called again trying to get my attention. I ignored her best I could and forced myself to continue marching down the hallway, picking up my pace.

I stormed through the open doors at the end of the hallway as I heard her feet begin to slap the tiled floor as she ran after me. I turned left and picked up the pace again to a slow jog as I moved further away from her, slowly catching up form. At the end of the new hallway I slipped round the corner and horror flashed onto my face as I came face to face with a brick wall. Dead end. I lifted my hands to my face and covered it in frustration. I was so stupid wondering around these halls. I was pathetic and lonely.  I small hand gently touched my shoulder and I jerked away quickly, spiralling around to face her. I hadn’t heard her come up behind me and her touch had scared me.

Her eyes landed almost instantly on the sharp panes of my face. A sharp intake of breath could be heard coming from the girls lips as a hand flew to her mouth and covered it. I stared at her worriedly as she raked her eyes over my face, my lips in a tight line. She grazed her eyes over my entire build, slowly drowning me with her eyes. Her chest began to heave up and down as she struggled to breath in enough air. She knew who I was, that was for sure. She slowly began to rock back and forth as her eyes looked like they were losing focus. “I-it’s y-you…” she stated in an almost inaudible voice.  I stepped closer to her in fear of her falling down. She moved again on her feet still swaying gently, like a leaf in the breeze. She slipped suddenly and I shot my arms out, effortlessly catching her light frame. I moved her so she was standing straight and steadied her on her feet keeping a light grip on her. Slowly her eyes rose up to mine and pierced right through my hazel ones. “Di-Dimitri?” she stuttered. My eyes widened still shocked from the fact that she knew me. “Dimitri Hardman?” she asked in a smooth weak voice. I deeply swallowed and slightly grimaced. A few painful moments washed between us as I paused. Swiftly I nodded my head up and down a few times, my eyes firmly fixed on the girl in my arms. She swallowed slightly as she calculated something in her head. Her eyes rolled lazily around her eye sockets as she began to lose focus on her surroundings. I tightened my grip on her slightly. She slumped downwards towards the floor with me still holding on to her. Her eyes closed as she flopped gently against my side.

I slipped down further and settled her on my side before gently tapping her check and trying to get her to regain consciousness. “Lydia wake up. Lydia” I hissed urgently through my teeth. But nothing. “Lydia” I hissed again. This time she stirred slightly and I breathed a sigh of relief. “Come on Lydia wake up”. She opened her eyes slowly and blinked a few times before shooting up from my side and standing on shaky legs. “I’m gonna be sick” she muttered turning slightly green. She rushed over to a bin in the corner and doubled over as she retched violently. I walked up behind her and awkwardly rubbed her back.

After those few awkward moments she staggered away from the bin and me wiping the back of her hand over her mouth. Leaning against a wall she took a few deep breaths. “What are you?” she asked me keeping her head down and her hands against her thighs. I cocked an eyebrow. “Dimitri Hardman” I said speaking to her for the first time. She shook her head and looked up at me. “No. I know who you are but what are you?” she asked her voice icy and cold. I stepped forward and she pressed herself tighter to the wall. “I…I can’t tell you” I mumbled freezing in my tracks. She scoffed and rolled her eyes up high to the sky. “You bloody well can. My cousin is in a mental asylum, because…of…you” she said breaking down the last three words. I flinched away from the harsh tone that she used and my heart broke at hearing the news of Oriana again. “I know she is and believe me that is not what I wanted…” she cut me off. “What did you want then? Go on explain” She demanded pulling herself up tall. I sighed and ran my hand through my already dishevelled hair. “I will. Just not here. Go back to class and I’ll come to your house at four. We’ll speak then” I told her urgently, pressing the point. She sighed and twisted a hair that escaped her tight pony tail around her finger. “Fine. But you better be there” she growled before shakily standing up straight and stalking, well wobbling, down the hallways that we had come from.

I waited for a few moments rooted to the spot before walking back towards her class to make sure she had made it. I rounded a corner a minute or so later and watched as she pulled open a door and listened as she stood still in the thresh hold of the class. “Where you been Lydia? Get stuck in the toilet?” A voice jeered from inside the room and the class erupted into laughter. “THAT IS ENOUGH GARET” the teacher bellowed and the class silenced themselves at once. I shook my head as she glanced at me before walking into the class room. I sighed and peeked through the window in the door at the clock behind the teachers head. I t read two fifty five. Only another fifteen minutes till the end of school and then another fifty minutes before five. I sighed and glanced at Lydia who had her head down as she scribbled in her work book. ‘I might as well go home and see my dad, actually do my job’ I thought as I stalked away from the door and of towards the front of the school.
