Chapter Twenty Three

Lydia

The door bell rang for the umpteenth time that evening. I rolled my eyes trying to ignore it and snuggled in closer to Jamie’s side. We were lying on the couch together with the TV playing a really bad horror film. Jamie pulled me closer wrapping his arm around my shoulders and placed a lingering kiss on my forehead. I smiled contently.

The bell sounded again and a very deep groan floated from my lips. Jamie laughed beside me. “You might want to open the door. I don’t think these ‘trick or treaters’ are going to take no for an answer” he informed me untangling his arm from my shoulders. I sat up and stretched just as the bell sounded again for the third time. “I’m coming” I called grumpily as a plodded slowly to the door in my sweats and one of Jamie’s t-shirts.

Grabbing the half empty bowl of sweets from the small hall table, I yanked open the door and my heart stopped. My hand became slack and the bowl dropped from my hand clanging as it hit the ground, the contents spilling around my feet. “Lydia, are you alright?” I heard Jamie call from the living room but my voice wouldn’t work. I looked back up into a face I never expected to see.

Except it wasn’t her real face. It was a mask. I traced my eyes over the shiny cardboard face of Oriana. I stared deeply into the eyes I could see through the slits in her eyes. They didn’t belong to her. The person in front of me lifted the face and slipped it over his head. My face paled and my legs began to sway. Smiling devilishly back at me was Blake. “Hello Lydia darling, Trick or Treat” he whispered darkly.

I swallowed loudly and gripped hold of the door handle. “What do you want?” I asked scowling and trying to sound threatening but I only slightly succeeded. He laughed once and crossed his arms, the cardboard face of Oriana dangling from one of his hands. “I just came to see if Oriana dearest was home yet” he said simply, smoothly.

“Get of my property” I said darkly. He chuckled again and reached a hand out to touch my face. I flinched as he trailed his hand up and down my face. “Why would I do that when someone so pretty is standing right in front of me?” he questioned his face close to mine. I turned my head to the side to remove his hand but he only grabbed hold of my chin roughly. I yelped. “Look at me when I am talking to you” he hissed.

“Lydia, babe, are you okay?” I heard a worried voice call as I heard Jamie stand from the sofa and make his way to the hallway. I stepped back and his hand released my chin. “Leave now” I demanded. He stepped into my house and dropped the mask roughly gripping my wrists and twisting them. I cried out in pain as my knees bent and they hovered, bent above the ground. “Lydia” Jamie called again just as he entered the hall way. I turned and saw him pause as his eyes widened. I winced again as Blake twisted my wrists again.

I turned back to Jamie. His eyes were in slits and his hands were balled up at his sides. “Get of off Lydia” He ordered quietly but darkly before striding forward and gripping hold of Blake’s back. Blake continued to twist as Jamie began to tug him of. My wrists fell to the ground as did I, as Blake was pulled away from me. Jamie raised one balled up fist and bought it down hard onto Blake’s jaw making a deafening crack fill the air.

Jamie pulled away shaking his hand. Blake wiped a small trickle of blood away from his split lip. “Get out” Jamie said lowly. Blake looked at him and laughed. Jamie’s hand shot to the ground as his anger rose. “GET OUT NOW” he yelled angrily. “And take this with you” he ordered thrusting the Oriana mask into his hand. Blake smiled darkly before leaving the house. He turned back and looked at my crumpled form on the ground. “I’ll be checking in again soon Lydia” he spoke slyly.
