Chapter Twenty Nine
OrianaBeep…beep…beep. A slow steady beeping filled my ears. Darkness met my eyes as a blanket of fog lay across my vision. Struggling to push away the fog, I tried to blink and open my eyes but they seemed to be glued shut. I next focused on trying to move my arm or my leg, move something.
The beeping continued as I continued to try and force my eyes open. It was useless. I couldn’t move my body and I couldn’t open my eyes. ‘Where am I?’ I thought helplessly as I continued to fight against my closed eyes. Giving up I succumbed to the darkness and fog creeping back over me.
*
“She should be waking up soon” an unfamiliar voice whispered to the side of me.
“Thank you doctor” I heard my mum say in a low hushed voice. The beeping was still happening but I could now hear the hushed voices of people around me. Suddenly my mum’s words registered in my clouded brain. Doctor? Was I in a hospital? Panic began to grip at the corners of my mind as I desperately tried to remember what could have happened landing me in a hospital. But all coherent thought was suddenly wiped clean as the fog suffocated me once more.*
My right hand twitched against a soft material as the incessant beeping continued. Focusing through the fog I managed to twitch my left hand also. A dull pins and needles feeling was spreading across the bass on my feet and climbing slowly up my legs. The fog was disappearing and I could feel my eye lids fluttering slightly. My mouth was dry and my throat felt blocked as I breathed in.
Blinking hard a few times, my eyes split open slightly as I peered around my surroundings. I forced them open before immediately closing them again. A gasp of shock came from beside me and the sound of a chair being pushed back slightly. “Oriana, honey” my mum cooed softly and I forced my eyes open again, squinting against the light.
I looked up and saw my mum hovering over me slightly a small smile on her lips and tears welling in her eyes. “Lydia go grab a nurse” she said hurriedly, glancing to the other side of the bed. My eyes slowly moved over to see Lydia stand and drag Jamie from the room quickly. Turning back to my mum, I blinked a few times adjusting my eyes to the light. My mum reached out a hand and gently pushed a few strands of hair back from my head.
Shifting my head slightly I became aware of an uncomfortable, full feeling in my throat. Reaching my hand upwards towards my mouth, my mum took hold of my hand before I could touch the tube that was in my throat. “Don’t touch that” she said softly. “The doctors will remove it for you”. I squeezed her hand in understanding and let it fall back to the mattress.
Shortly after Lydia and Jamie returned followed by a woman in a white lab coat and a few nurses. The nurses stepped forward and began fussing over my ventilator slowly taking it away from me. They left and the doctor stepped forward as I tried to swallow. “Water?” she asked holding out a plastic cup with a straw to me. I nodded slowly and she approached me, placing the straw in my mouth as I gulped down some of the water. It instantly made my throat feel better as it flowed down. The cup was placed next to my bed and the doctor began checking the machines, fussing over them and taking notes on her note pad.
I was becoming increasingly aware of a heavy weight pressing down on my abdomen as I lay still on my bed. Craning my neck upwards I looked towards my stomach but only saw the soft white material of the bed sheet covering. Frowning I leant on my elbows and pushed myself up. Hot searing pain spread through my stomach as I cried out in pain and slumped back onto the bed. Hearing my outburst my mum jumped up from her chair and rushed towards me.
