Chapter Twenty Two
Oriana
“Are you sure you want to stay here on your own, I mean its Halloween night?!” I asked Malone for the umpteenth time that night. I was so excited to be spending the evening watching scary films; I just didn’t want to have to walk all the way back to the room on my own once they were finished. Malone smiled at me sadly. “Oriana I promise I’ll be fine on my own. I just don’t like Halloween, it’s not my thing” she said lazily from the bed she was tucked up in.
I turned away from the dresser with my jumper over my head. I pulled it down over my head and sat next to Malone on her bed. “I’ll make sure that Heath stays away from you?” I bargained. She laughed humourlessly.
“Me staying here has nothing to do with me breaking up with Heath” she said adamantly. I nodded once not one bit convinced. “Well please stay awake for me so I can come back and tell you all about the films we watch?” I asked her praying she would stay awake and not leave me fumbling around for the bed in the darkness. She smiled knowingly. “Okay I’ll stay up so you can ‘tell me all about the films’” she said smiling and making air quotes.
Standing up I gave her a quick kiss on her head and walked towards the door. Just as my hand made contact with the shiny door knob she called out to me. I turned my head in her direction and she looked at me quizzically. “Is it strange that Heath hasn’t tried to speak to me since we broke up? I mean it just seems wired that he hasn’t even looked at me in the eye since it happened” she asked thoughtfully. I slumped back on the door and sighed. “Well maybe he just wants to figure this out himself. I don’t know maybe he will speak to you when you least expect him too” I told her quickly, itching to get out of the room. She nodded and smiled sadly. “You’re probably right. Now go and enjoy yourself” she shooed me away and picked up a book smiling at me. I mouthed thank you as I slipped out of the door and closed it softly behind me.
I walked down the corridor with a, huge excited smile lighting up my face. Just as I was entering the common room, a small weight crashed into my back and clung to me. My heart jumped into my mouth as I stumbled to regain balance. Small, frail arms slipped loosely around my neck and thin legs tightened around my waist crossing at the ankles. “I wonder who this is” I said laughing and smiling. Elizabeth’s cute giggle floated around me and into my ears. “Carry me to the seats?” she asked hopefully. I smiled but sighed for dramatic effect. “Do I have a choice?” I asked hooking my arms under her legs and laughing along with her. She settled herself more comfortably. “Giddyup” she exclaimed happily and I began walking towards our friends laughing with Elizabeth clinging to my back laughing with me.
“Here horsey over here, good girl” Damien coaxed smiling wickedly. I scowled and shifted Elizabeth slightly on my back. “Who you calling a horse?” I asked trying to stop the smile from splitting through my frown. He stood up straight and placed his hands on his hips. “The girl walking around with another human on her back” he replied. I rolled my eyes and let the smile slip easily back onto my face.
I slumped heavily onto the sofa next to Alice leaving room for Elizabeth to sit beside me. I leant forward as she prized her body from mine and occupied the seat next to me. “Up kid” Damien said playfully to Elizabeth as he stood over her looking down. She looked up and sweetly stuck her tongue out at him causing Alice and I to erupt into a fit of giggles. “Put me down” Elizabeth exclaimed as she was hoisted from the soft sofa and into the air by Damien. He flopped down next to me and placed the yelling teen on his lap stretching her legs over my lap and resting her back on the arm rest. I rolled my eyes and turned my attention to the matron standing at the front of the room with most people crowding around on the floor while some, like us, crowded onto sofas.
