Chapter Sixteen
Mrs Kurtis
“Hello. Lydia are you home?” I called as I peeled the front door open and stepped into the house. I placed my keys and bag down onto the side board and closed the door quietly behind me. “Hello” I called out again and the only reply I got was my voice bouncing back towards me in an eerie echo. I sighed and kicked of my shoes before padding softly into the kitchen bare foot.
Slipping into one of the chairs around the table I thought back over the last few weeks. Life had been tough and strange without having Oriana around in the house. Lydia blamed me for this of course. I mean who else could she blame? I knew what people were saying to her at school but she wouldn’t talk to me, she didn’t want me involved anymore. Ever since Friday 16th she has been cold to me and harsh, ever since the argument in the morning before school. She came home a little bit cheerier than how she left but on Saturday she was out the house as soon as she could mumbling something about meeting a friend. I worried about her. She was all I had left and I didn’t want to let her go.
It had been almost a week since that morning and it was now Thursday 22nd and I was sitting in the kitchen on my own at four thirty in the afternoon. This had never happened to me before this last week and now it was becoming a recurring event. Lydia was up to something and I need to know what it was.
I stood and stretched before walking to the sink and turning the tap to fill the glass in my hand with water. I sipped it slowly and soon the sound of feet coming up the driveway made me pause and listen. Lydia was talking to someone but her voice was too far away. I edged closer to the kitchen door and lent against the door frame and listened.
“So, same time tomorrow? Straight after I finfish school?” she asked there was a pause and no one replied I frowned as I listened to her continue talking to someone or rather ‘herself’. “Okay yeah that sounds good. It’s only been a week we’ll find something, I promise”. There was more silence and then she spoke again saying something I really wish she didn’t say. “We will get her back Dimitri Hardman, don’t you worry” she said with what sounded like a smile. I felt the blood drain from my face and my grip slacked on the glass causing it to tumble to the ground and smash, sloshing cold, wet water over my unsuspecting feet. I was frozen to the spot.
I faintly heard the sound of Lydia saying a hurried quick good bye before a key clicked into the door and it was urgently flung open. “Aunt Andria, are you okay?” she called with concern lacing her voice. ‘She said Dimitri Hardman. She was talking to him. But he’s dead’ was all I could think. I lifted my gaze to see her closing the door and dumping her bag before looking at me in alarm and rushing forward. “Are you okay? What happened?” she questioned as she approached. I couldn’t speak I just stared at her in horror. “Auntie?” She asked again. I cleared my voice and smiled weakly.
“No...Nothing dear I just had a fright” I whispered softly. She nodded but still didn’t look convinced.
I bent down slowly and began to pick up large chunks of broken glass. “Here let me do that you go and calm down okay?” Lydia told me bending down next to me. I nodded once. “Actually, there is somewhere I need to be. Excuse me” I mumbled quickly, pushing up from the ground, stepping over the glass and stuffing my still wet feet into the shoes I had previously kicked off. “But you have had a fright. I think you should sit down” Lydia protested following me.
