Aiden Vasilakis

"How's this?"

She glanced over at the option I was pointing at and laughed. Her eyes eventually found my face, and she realised I wasn't laughing along; her laughter came to a halt. "Oh, you're serious? God, do men have no taste?"

I brought my gaze back down to the ring concealed by the glass frame, examining it once more. It was a pretty ring: a gold band ring with one large square diamond in the centre. But truth be told, I was completely fucking clueless. All the rings looked nice, but I needed them to be perfect. Perfect for her.

I rolled my eyes, moving further down the display, "Why did I even bring you along?"

"Because you need me, duh," Theadora followed along, looking through the displays as we passed, nothing catching our attention. "The ring can make or break a proposal, you know?"

It was true, I needed her. Not only to help me pick out a ring, but also to help ease my nerves and reassure me that I wasn't completely out of line for thinking that this was what I needed in my life.

This past month was so good for us. Perfect even. We brought Kristal's father, Alec, home to our apartment despite his stubborn reluctance, and things couldn't have been better. I watched her heal her inner child, watched that sparkle flicker brighter with every laugh he drew from her. She was happier than ever.

Our apartment felt like a home. Every day, it was filled with so much laughter, I was surprised we hadn't received a noise complaint yet. Thea and Cole got in on the fun, coming over practically every day and instilling chaos. And it all just felt good, life just felt complete.

Kristal and I had spoken about marriage here and there, so I knew we were on the same page. I knew that that was something we both wanted from our relationship. But fuck, the nerves were still getting the best of me.

"Ew, Aiden"

"You know, when we get married, this is going to be the main course, so get used to it," I said with a chuckle, adding the final touches to my masterpiece. And by that I mean squirting ketchup on my plate of mac and cheese.

Something that absolutely repulsed the lady sat on the kitchen counter, a cup of chamomile tea in hand. It was well past midnight, and I had only just gotten home from a work conference, what better way to wind down than with some comfort food, instant mac and cheese and ketchup.

"You said when. . ." I looked over to see her smile grow into a grin.

"Hell yeah, I did. What do you think this is, Darlin? You're it for me."

She struggled to maintain eye contact as her cheeks turned a deeper shade of rosy pink. "Well i that concoction is anywhere near our reception, just know that divorce papers will be signed on the spot."

"Duly noted, Mrs Vasilakis."

"Do you think I'm getting too ahead of myself? Is it too early?" I asked Thea, who had sort of become the big little sister I never had. I was second-guessing everything I thought I knew about us, about Kris.

"Well, what is your heart telling you? Does it feel too early for you?"

I stopped walking and turned to face her, "I wanted to marry her the second I saw her at her window. I have never been so sure about something in my life. It's her I'm worried about; things are finally starting to look up for her, I wouldn't want to ruin that or make her rush into anything she isn't ready for."

"I'm about to break girl code here, but she may or may not already have a Pinterest board titled 'wedding inspiration', and that is literally womanese for 'marry me yesterday'," She let out a chuckle. "Look, I know Kris like the back of my hand, and I know you; you two were made for each other. You're the literal definition of soulmates, and if you're feeling ready to take that next step in your relationship, I know for a fact she is too. So stop being such a pussy and put a ring on her finger."
