Aiden Vasilakis

Pain was the first thing I felt.

So much pain coming from every direction, I couldn't pinpoint the root of it.

Then came the sound: laughter, chatter coming from every direction. The voices were faint and incoherent at first but they grew clearer. Clear enough for me to pick up on the fact that they were speaking another language. Italian.

My blood ran cold as I tried to move my aching limbs. The restraints held me in place.

I listened intently, not wanting to alert them that I was regaining consciousness just yet. I tried to pick up any familiar words, find any context clues as to how I got here. But with my limited knowledge of Italian and the speed at which they spoke, I had nothing.

So I had no choice but to open my eyes. The light wasn't harsh but it still took a few seconds for me to adjust. The interior of a private jet came into view, and the continuous roar of the engine finally registered in my ear. I was bound to the large leather chair with chains, a cloth in between my teeth, secured tightly around the back of my neck, preventing me from speaking.

It all started coming back to me. The black SUV that pursued me, the way it drove me off the road and made me hit that tree. I lost conciousness but there was a moment or two where I was aware of my surroundings; I felt my body being pulled at. It didn't take a genius to figure out that they had pulled me out of my wrecked car. It explained why I was in so much pain; breathing was a difficult and laborious task, and turning my neck to look out the window was an impossible task. Every bone in my body felt like it had gone through a blender.

A slight glance out the window was all I could muster, revealing a setting sun and mountains below.

Kristal.

She was the first thing that came to mind. My heart grew heavy knowing that I was god knows how many miles away from her.

This is what my father wanted. This was his legendary plan for me. His only child. He couldn't get his happy ending with the woman he supposedly loved, and he did everything in his power to ensure that I suffered the same fate.

I shut my eyes for a second, giving in to the pain.

What could she be thinking of me? That I abandoned her? Left her without any explanation?

Fuck.

This was never part of the plan. I was going to be a reason for more tears in her life. I was the reason for more pain.

My selfishness was the root of it all. If I ended things as soon as I found out about my uncertain future. I could have made things better; I could've have let her down slowly. Now god knows what she thought of me.

Robert knew my fate from the very start, he kept insisting that my relationship with her was only temporary. He knew all along, yet he still allowed me to live in the fantasy, allowed me to fall so deeply in love with her, just to rip it all away from us. He had the power to stop it all, but he didn't. That's how cruel he was.

"Look who's finally awake." The strong, thick Italian accent snapped me out of my thoughts. Their attention was on me now. Four men, all in black suits. They sat around a retractable table, playing poker.

"Sleeping beauty is up." Another one added with a crooked laugh, making the others chuckle along. I kept my gaze straight ahead, each blink bringing images of her behind my eyelids. Her smile. Her eyes. Her hair. She was all I could think about.

I lost her. The first woman to ever speak to my soul, to connect to my very being in a way I never thought possible. The first woman I ever loved, gone just like that. How could this be the end when I still had so much love to give? When my fucking soul would forever be intertwined with hers? Entangled for eternity?

"Lemme tell you something," The first man spoke once again, getting up and walking over to the leather chair opposite the one I was on. He settled in, staring at me, taking in my appearance with a smirk on his face. Young, dirty blonde, bright blue eyes and a deep scar on his right cheek. "I can't tell if your father is the stupidest man alive, or if he just hates your guts." Laughter fills the cabin.

The latter. I would have said if it weren't for the cloth that was tied so tight, I could barely feel my jaw. All I could do was stare, keeping my expression neutral.

"Your father just signed your death sentence; you won't survive this. All of us were initiated into NP as soon as we could walk. You're a grown man who's never held a gun before; you have no place there."

Kristal. Fuck, I could barely focus on what he was saying. All I could see, hear, feel was her. I couldn't stop wondering where she was, what she was doing, if I said 'I love you' enough, if I hugged her hard enough, kissed her passionately enough. I couldn't stop. I could almost feel her soul calling out to mine, sending distress signals that only my soul could read. But I couldn't reach her.

The man continued, "But you know what? I'm a nice guy, always willing to help and I just feel so bad for you, for what's to come now that you tried to run away and betray the organisation before you were even initiated."

I furrowed my brows in confusion at his statement. When the fuck did I try to run- Robert. The realisation dawned on me before I could even finish my thought.

I threatened his reputation; of course, he had to get me out of his way as soon as possible. What better way to do that than to claim that I was going to betray a world-class criminal organisation?

"Matteo, settle down." Another man said, his voice lower, wiser. If his salt and pepper were any indication of age, I'd say he was the oldest in the group.

The blonde guy, Matteo, brushed him off with a dismissive wave. "I'm just helping out our fellow brother, God knows he needs it." He chuckled sadistically. "As I said, I'm a very nice guy, so I'll help you. The most basic thing you'll need to know is our oath. I'll recite it for you. Pay attention because it might just save your life."

Paradise is Order.
Paradise is Loyalty.
Paradise is Secrecy.
Paradise is Sacrifice.
Paradise is not given, it is taken.
We do not seek the heaven above; we build it from the ground up.
If we break these vows, may paradise reject us.

May we wander forever, without name, without shelter, without peace.

"Welcome to the beginning of the rest of your life, Aiden Vasilakis."
