Chapter 3: Someone Else's Way of Life

I had thought that dinner would be a little awkward or maybe strange with all the boys here, and I was absolutely right.

“Okay, dinner's ready!” Terry called everyone into the kitchen.

The average sized, wooden table usually sat six people, but we had squeezed three plastic, folding chairs in at weird angles in order to fit everyone. I ended up sitting uncomfortably close to both Peter and Harry; there was hardly elbow room. The table was loaded down with all the food Terry and I had made, including tacos, enchiladas, cheese dip, and a couple of my other specialties. Somehow, Niall was across from me, and he immediately grabbed a bit of everything. I tried really hard to just eat my cheese enchiladas neatly, but I couldn't help but grin watching Niall scarf down all of his food.

“Dakota, you're not even eating your own tacos,” Harry scolded me in a teasing way.

“I don't eat meat,” I said quietly before taking another bite of my food.

“Oh, hm,” he said thoughtfully, then he just shrugged and continued eating.

I was glad that no one made a big deal out of it because I really wasn't one to be the center of attention; that was more of Kadence's forte.

“Food is good as always,” Peter said to fill the silence.

Everyone nodded and spoke words of agreement.

“Hey, uh, how much does a polar bear weigh?” Kadence suddenly asked all of us.

I quirked an eyebrow and looked over at her curiously, wondering what she was up to.

Zayn asked with furrowed eyebrows of his own, “How much?”

“Enough to break the ice.”

Kadence was grinning from ear to ear, and we all tried not to laugh at her horrible pun. Louis cracked first, then the rest of the boys and I. Terry and Peter were trying to seem so disappointed, shaking their heads at their daughter in a pitying way, but they too were smiling and chuckling under their breath.

“So what is life like being famous?” Peter asked what was secretly on our minds.

The boys all seemed like they expected the question as they glanced at each other.

“It's interesting,” Zayn said before taking a bite of his taco.

“Kind of hectic,” Harry added.

“A dream,” Liam said.

“Sometimes annoying,” Louis pointed out.

“But definitely worth it all,” Niall spoke up.

Peter nodded, and we waited for more.

“It's just weird because, as you guys know of course, we're all so, so, normal,” Zayn told us. “We are completely and utterly normal human beings. We happen to be really passionate about singing, and people really like it. So, suddenly we're this worldwide phenomenon. It can be hard to handle sometimes.”

“The fans are great and all; we'd be no where without them,” Liam said. “But, at the same time, they are so possessive, and it can be kind of crazy. I can remember, not even four years ago, my life was completely different, and now, there's people watching my every move and analyzing every single thing I do.”
