Chapter 16: Someone Else's Chore

Long story short, I beat the shit out of Zayn after he caused us to be pelted by not only marshmallows but Nerf guns too, jokingly of course. But really. Harry, Zayn, and I were chased around the yard countless time, and Liam, Louis, and Niall even turned against us and joined the enemy. Point being though, I got my revenge on the twats, Drew and Kadence included. Then, I ate Oreos while I watched them rolling around in the grass desperately. Itching powder worked wonders.

I made sure to keep my distance though because I sure as hell didn't want any of that powder to get on me. No sir. Not again. After I finished eating the package of cookies, I took pity on them and very kindly doused them with the hose. I was only trying to be helpful, but they didn't appreciate it very much. This of course led to them turning on me and soaking me to the bone. So then, we were all completely drenched and unable to go inside. Thankfully, none of my shoes had gotten ruined. Shit would've really gone down if one of my pieces of hard work got destroyed.

As I looked around at all of us, trying our hardest to dry off so that we could get inside, I realized how much I loved everyone here. I never thought much of Kadence's friend and his band coming to stay with us for the summer until the morning of their arrival, literally. Kadence had only been talking about it since before graduation, but with all the craziness that came with the end of the school year, it slipped my mind. It sounded ridiculous and nearly impossible to forget about five boys that you were practically forced to watch on TV for a good couple of years coming to stay with you for a month during the summer, but believe me, I had plenty of other things to think about.

Now though, I had no pressing issues. I knew where I would be going to college in the fall, and I was way too excited to begin my studies. I wasn't going to wish away the rest of the precious summer and all of the freedom that came with it, but I was happy about getting to go to Adams. The only unresolved problem that remained was money. As much as I hated Zayn for pushing the issue of him paying for my own education, he now made thoughts jumble around my head. I would need a way to pay for college, and goodness knows that I couldn't pay it all by selling clothes and shoes online. Business was never guaranteed, and I was going through a rut right now. Maybe if I just put those shoes up with Harry's signature.

I wasn't too fond of that idea though because then whoever bought them would be paying for a sloppy signature and not my own work. If people were going to buy something from me, I wanted it to be mine. It was a silly matter of pride, but I didn't think it was too difficult to understand. Besides, if I was going to take pride in anything, it should most certainly be my own designs.

“You all are soaked again?” Terry called from the house, making us all jump.

I hadn't even realized how much time had passed. The sun loved to stay out so much longer during the summer that I could never tell when evening had hit. Terry went back inside but quickly returned with a stack of towels and tossed them at us.

“Dry off and get inside,” she scoffed.

We all groaned and complained, but we each took a towel to dry ourselves off. Except Zayn seemed to have a different idea in mind.

“Hey Kadence, want a hug?” he grinned.

“No,” she crinkled her nose. “You're still wet.”

Zayn smirked, ignored her answer, and ran to her, enveloping her in a tight hug that she fought against while squealing and giggling. An unexplainable something grasped my heart in an iron grip and yanked on it with all of its might. I told myself that it was nothing, just two friends teasing each other, but Kadence's words replayed in my mind. She admitted to liking Zayn, so I’m sure that she was enjoying being lifted slightly off of her feet in Zayn's grip. The smile on his face seemed too honest, too carefree, for my liking. Most likely, he felt something for Kadence too; how would he not?
