Chapter 7: Someone Else's Past Encounters

Drew's dad made spaghetti with meatballs on the side, and all three of us sat around the small, circular kitchen table, Drew and I now fully clothed. We ate quietly, but I could tell that Drew preferred this rather than just him and his dad. The pressure was off of his shoulders for one night.

“So how's work going?” I asked Mr. Ross politely.

“Oh, it's going very well thank you,” he smiled. “We're just designing new products as always.”

Mr. Ross went straight back to eating his food, so I nodded and went back to my own food. Drew's dad worked long hours at a chemical engineering plant and helped design their products. He loved what he did, but it was also an excellent source of distraction from his and Drew's problems at home.

“What about you, Dakota?” he asked me. “How's your summer been so far?”

I swallowed my mouthful of pasta and said, “Oh, it's nice. Kadence has some friends staying with us this month, so that's a bit different.”

Glancing sideways at Drew, he gave me a knowing smile and a sly wink. I smiled at him too, but then Mr. Ross spoke up again.

“So have you decided where you're going to college?” he asked, and I felt anxiety pool in my stomach.

I chuckled a bit too forcefully and said, “I'm just waiting on results from Adams Art Academy.”

“Good, good,” he nodded.

We all kept eating without any other attempts at conversation. Drew already got his acceptance letter to the University of Florida, same as Kadence, where he would be studying engineering. When we finally finished, Mr. Ross said that he would clean up the dishes. Drew and I went back outside and laid down in the grass beyond the patio. We joked for a while, having a couple more beers between the two of us. We talked aimlessly while pointing out images in the sky. The sky was beginning to get darker, but I knew that soon enough the stars would be out, lighting up the night sky. As the fireflies started filling the backyard, I sat up with a start and jumped to my feet.

“¡Chingados! (Fuck!),” I near shouted, running to where my phone and clothes sat on the lounge chair.

“What's up Dakota?” Drew asked worriedly.

“I told Kadence I'd be back before dinner!” I told him as I put on my shoes. “She's going to be so pissed.”

“She knew where you were, right? You'll be fine,” Drew tried to calm me down.

“I don't know,” I mumbled. “I've really got to go though.”

“Okay, but not without a hug goodbye,” he grinned.

I rolled my eyes with a smile, but I still went to Drew and gave him a tight squeeze.

“Thanks for having dinner with us,” he said quietly before he let me go.

“It's no problem,” I smiled at him. “I'll see you again soon!”

“Yeah you better!” he called after me as I went back inside his house.

“Thanks for dinner Mr. Ross,” I told his dad who was sitting in the family room reading a book.

“Anytime, Dakota,” he smiled.
