Chapter 6: Someone Else's Childhood Memories

I was finally able to wake up on my own the next morning at a comfortable eleven o clock. Strangely enough though, I didn't hear any sounds from Kadence or the boys. Scrunching my eyebrows in curiosity, I got out of bed and put on some clothes before creeping downstairs. I knew there was no way they were still sleeping, but I didn't see them in the kitchen or the living room. I was just about to give up my halfhearted search when I heard faint shouts from outside. Looking out the back door, I saw Kadence and the boys kicking around a soccer ball. I smiled, but then went to get breakfast, knowing I would not be fully awake or happy until I had food in my stomach.

I grabbed an apple and slipped outside, sitting down in the grass and leaning my back against the house as I watched them play. Kadence had always been a good soccer player, hence her scholarship to the University of Florida, so she was kicking the boys' butts. I took a deep breath of the summer breeze and bit into my apple, enjoying the abundant sunshine.

“Heads up!” Liam shouted, and I moved to the side so that the ball could hit the house instead of crushing my face.

“God, I am so sorry Dakota,” Niall said worriedly, rushing over to me. “I didn't even know you were there.”

“You're fine,” I smiled up at him. “I didn't get hit, so it's okay. I'm more surprised at what a terrible shot you are.”

He rolled his eyes but was still grinning as he sat down next to me. I hugged my knees close to me and took another bite of my apple, wondering why he wasn't going to go back to play.

“Figured you could use some company,” he shrugged when he saw my questioning gaze then added breathlessly, “And, I could use a break, but don't tell them.”

He winked at me, and I chuckled while shaking my head.

“Well, I've got to meet up with my friend Drew anyway,” I told him, standing up after I finished my apple. “Something about a couple of weeks apart being too long.”

“Oh yeah, of course,” he said, getting up and going back to the game.

He waved at me obnoxiously, so I waved back and called out to Kadence, “I'll be back before dinner.”

“Wait!” she cried, running over to me while the boys kept passing the ball around. “Where are you going?”

“Just over to Drew's,” I said

“Oh,” she pouted. “I wish I could go, but I better stay with the boys.”

I nodded and said, “Maybe we can all hang out together sometime soon.”

“That would be great!” she grinned, her eyes simmering in the sunlight.

I nodded again and finally escaped inside. I tossed my apple core into the trash before going upstairs to check my phone. As I expected, Drew had texted back saying that I could come over whenever. Crouching down, I searched through my drawer of shorts until I found my black pair that had a galaxy pattern on them and exchanged them for my sport shorts. Then, I just put on a plain white T-shirt and tossed my hair up in a ponytail. I made sure I had my phone before going downstairs and leaving out the front door. Drew's house wasn't too much of a walk, and the weather was beautiful today.

It was nice and peaceful with only the blowing of the breeze and the chirping of the birds. This would always be my favorite type of day, where all deadlines and obligations seemed so distant that they were almost unreal. After a couple of more blocks, I reached Drew's house, but for just a moment, I paused and looked at the house across the street from his. It was a simple single story home with a matching single car garage. The flowers underneath the windows were in bloom now, proudly showing their colors. Certainly the new homeowners cared about the house's image much more than my dad had.
