Chapter 8: Someone Else's Bright Idea

Kadence and I sat together the next day under the shade of the huge oak tree while the boys ran around, tackling each other and aiming with some Nerf guns. I was too concentrated on the white pair of Keds that I was doodling on with some colored sharpies to pay attention to them. Kadence was fairly quiet for once, chuckling occasionally at the boys only to turn and watch me for a few minutes and on and on. It was a peaceful hump day as Kadence fondly called Wednesdays.

“Man, I cannot get over how absolutely fit Zayn is,” Kadence said softly, leaning over towards me casually.

I looked up for just a moment and couldn't help but agree. All the boys were attractive, but something about Zayn pulled at me. And, he was the only one besides Niall that I felt semi comfortable with.

“You and Niall seem to be getting along,” Kadence trailed mischievously.

I shook my head quickly and said, “I don't like him like that. I don't like any of them like that. I hardly know them.”

“Okay, okay, just wondering,” she assured me. “Couldn't help but be curious.”

I rolled my eyes and went back to my shoes, feeling my muscles relax one at a time.

“By the way, Dakota,” she started talking again, “I really am sorry about last night. I just, I've seen people I know completely transform.”

I looked over at Kadence, but she was staring at some far away place, lost in her memories. Shivering slightly, she hugged her knees to her chest and put her chin on them.

“He was a good guy Dakota,” she told me absently.

“Kadence he-” I tried to say, but she wouldn't have it.

“I know what he did, but he was a good guy,” she insisted.

I didn't say anything else; I only pursed my lips in a straight line. I knew that Kadence never did want to believe what had happened that night, but the fact that she still thought that Adam Thompson, varsity football star and heartthrob, was a good guy was a little concerning. Deciding it was better for her to sift through her thoughts on her own, I refocused on the shoes. I didn't get much time to relax though before a Nerf pellet narrowly missed Kadence, and she squealed in surprise. I jolted up along with Kadence and saw both Harry and Louis holding Nerf guns with panicked looks.

They both pointed at each other and said at the same time, “It was him!”

The corners of my lips twitched upwards, and Kadence glared at them and said, “Now you're both in for it!”

She hopped up and started chasing them around, trying to be serious about the situation, but she was laughing the whole time. I didn't even realize when Zayn sat down next to me. I just looked over and jumped slightly when I saw that he had replaced Kadence.

“Those are coming along nicely,” he nodded towards the shoes.

“Thanks,” I mumbled, bending my head down and going back to work on them.

My hair kept falling in front of my face though, even when I blew puffs of air to get them out of the way. Zayn laughed at my struggle, but I just sent a glare his way before piling all of my curls on top of my head and tying it off sloppily. Smiling, I went back to finishing the pattern on the first shoe.

“Please tell me you're going into some sort of art career,” Zayn said suddenly.

I glanced at him and said, “Uh, yeah, I want to go into fashion design.”
