Chapter 9: Someone Else's Embarrassment

I was able to float through the rest of the week by hanging out with the boys and becoming more comfortable around them, making and selling even more shoes, and keeping up with Drew. All in all they were great distractions from my underlying worries about my impending future. I was becoming more and more anxious with every passing day that I didn't get a letter. Terry and Mark kept feeling bad though since they haven't been able to spend much time with the boys because they've been working during the week. So, they promised to take the boys and Kadence to an amusement park on Saturday. I told them that I would stay at home because I would only be dead weight. I hated roller coasters, and I figured that Mr. and Mrs. Hughes could use some quality time getting to know the boys just like Kadence and I had. Kadence didn't like the idea of me staying at home, nobody did, but I made sure to tell them that I was fine and that they better have a good time.

With one last wave from the front door courtesy of me, they were off and out of sight. I hopped back upstairs but didn't bother changing out of my huge T-shirt and long basketball shorts because it would only be me, myself, and I today. I had bought four new pair of shoes yesterday using some of my earnings, so I was excited to get started on some new designs. Munching on an apple, I sketched some patterns onto one pair. Apparently, Louis was a huge lover of Toms and Superman, or so I've been told. So, I planned on surprising him with a pair of Superman inspired Toms. Hopefully, I would do a pair for each of the boys, but I needed ideas.

I finished drawing the logo and other designs onto the Toms before I went down to eat lunch. I had actually woken up at a normal time I suppose since I had been awake when everyone left. After I finished eating, I turned on the TV and lazily hung out on the couch, not wanting to start painting yet. Since the house was empty, I decided to take advantage of this time I had to myself. I plugged in my iPod to the speakers in the family room and turned it up way past just jamming. Led Zeppelin started blaring, and I smiled and started humming along obnoxiously. I went to the kitchen and grabbed the bag of Oreos. It might be bad for my health, but I was kind of addicted. I sat back down on the couch while I ate my cookies.

I loved old rock bands, but I rarely truly listened to them because they were best heard at near deafening volumes. I wasn't into making a scene, and I preferred quieter music while I worked. Several cookies later, I went to put them away and maybe go and paint one of the pairs of shoes waiting for me when ACDC started playing. I groaned in happiness and excitement as the beginning chords played. I grabbed a spatula before running back to the family room and jumping on the couch.

I strummed my air guitar and then brought the spatula to my mouth and sang loudly, “She was a fast machine. She kept her motor clean. She was the best damn woman that I’ve ever seen. She had the sightless eyes, telling me no lies.”

I knew I was probably off key, but no one was home so I didn’t care. I jumped off the couch and ran around the room singing, “Knocking me out with those AMERICAN thighs! Taking more than her share, had me fighting for air. She told me to come, but I was already there.”

I faced the wall and closed my eyes shouting out, “Cause the walls started shaking! The earth was quaking! My mind was aching! And we were making it! And YOU! Shook me all night long! Yeah you!”

I turned around and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw Kadence, Terry, and the boys all staring at me and trying their hardest not to laugh. I blushed so deeply, I was surprised my cheeks didn’t spontaneously combust. I ran over to the speakers and killed the music.
