Chapter 11: Someone Else's Bedtime Story
Dinner was uneventful, and afterward, we all watched a movie together. This time it was When In Rome, one of Kadence's personal favorites because of Josh Duhamel. I also quite enjoyed it since it was just a romantic comedy, and I think the boys even liked it as well. After the movie though, everyone pretty much headed off for bed. Alone in my room, I tried my best to fall asleep and for once get a full night's sleep.
I tossed and turned for hours before finally giving up and creeping downstairs. My hands searched through the pantry, not daring to turn on a light, until I felt the package and smiled. Holding it carefully, I quietly went out the back door and sat down in the grass. I looked up at the sky and smiled when I saw it was another clear summer night, so I could see the stars. Then, my midnight snacking got the better of me, and I returned my attention to the Oreo cookies, opening the package and taking one out. I took off the top and ate it in one bite before licking all of the icing off of the other part of the sandwich. Lastly, I popped the other cookie in my mouth, closing my eyes in happiness. The simple joy of eating Oreo cookies under the stars. My eyes flew open though when I realized I was forgetting something very crucial: a cup of milk. I set the package down on the ground and then went back inside. The fridge let out a long squeal when I opened it, making even me cringe. Hopefully that didn’t wake anyone up. I just shrugged and poured myself a cup, snapped on a lid, stuck a bendy straw in, and rejoined my cookies outside. I had just barely eaten my second cookie though when the sliding door opened from behind me, causing me to whip around with wide eyes. It was just Zayn though, wearing a white T-shirt, sweatpants, and a smirk.
“Oreo cookies this late at night?” he asked, quirking an eyebrow.
I crossed my arms and told him, “Of course, when else am I supposed to eat them?”
He just smiled and shook his head, taking a seat next to me. I crossed my legs Indian style and grabbed another cookie while looking up at the constellations again.
“So what are you really doing up?” he asked me.
I shrugged and said, “I couldn’t sleep. This is what I always do when I can’t sleep, come out here, look at the stars, and work my way to obesity, one insomniatic night at a time.”
Zayn let out a hearty laugh, one that brought a smile to my face. I wasn’t sure why his laugh made me so happy, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to know why. It tugged at that same thing that his smile did, well his smile and his dark hair and tan skin and his muscles and his voice. I shook my head to snap out of it, grabbing another cookie to clear my head.
“Oh you can have one by the way,” I blurted out awkwardly, shoving the package near him.
He smiled again and took one, but then he proceeded to just eat the sandwich cookie in one, single bite. My mouth dropped open, and I stared at him as though he were an alien. He kept glancing over at me while I gaped at him until finally he met my eyes without looking away and said, “What?”
“You cannot just eat an Oreo cookie the way you did,” I said dead serious.
He raised his eyebrows at me and said, “I believe I just did. How am I supposed to eat them?”
“Well first, you have to split it,” I told him, grabbing my own cookie and splitting it. “Then, you eat the cookie part.”
He was watching me with an amused expression and a twinkle in his eyes. I could tell he thought I was being funny, but honestly, I just couldn’t see how that boy thought he grew up right. Then again, it could just be British people; I had to teach Kadence too.
